Fundus examination using mydriatic agents?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask a couple of questions.
Today, I had a retinal examination that involved the use of dilating drops.

1.
How long does it typically take for the effects of the dilation to wear off? It has been about 6 hours, and I still feel that my distance vision is somewhat blurry.

2.
After researching online, I found that dilation can increase the amount of ultraviolet (UV) and blue light entering the eye, potentially raising the risk of cataracts or glaucoma.
I happened to be walking outside in the bright sun for over an hour while still dilated.
Could this have an impact on my eyes? I am quite anxious about a series of eye issues, so I would appreciate your clarification.

Dr. Liang Ce reply Ophthalmology

Recommendations: 1.
Discuss the above situation further with your attending physician.
2.
Alternatively, consult with another ophthalmology medical facility.
Thank you.
Wishing you good health!

Pupil dilation is a common procedure during retinal exams, and it is understandable to have concerns about its effects, especially given your history of retinal degeneration and high myopia. Let’s address your questions regarding the duration of dilation effects and the potential risks associated with exposure to sunlight while your pupils are dilated.

1. Duration of Pupil Dilation Effects: The effects of pupil dilation can vary from person to person, but typically, the dilation caused by medications like Better Eye Drops (the short-acting mydriatic you mentioned) can last anywhere from 4 to 6 hours, sometimes even longer depending on the specific agent used and individual response. If you are still experiencing blurred vision after 6 hours, it is not uncommon, especially if you have underlying conditions such as high myopia. The blurred vision can be due to the inability of the eye to focus properly when the pupils are dilated. If the blurriness persists beyond 24 hours, or if you experience any other concerning symptoms such as pain, redness, or significant changes in vision, it is advisable to contact your eye care provider for further evaluation.

2. Exposure to Sunlight During Dilation: You are correct that dilated pupils allow more light, including harmful ultraviolet (UV) and blue light, to enter the eye. This increased exposure can potentially raise the risk of developing conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma over time, particularly if exposure is prolonged and frequent. Walking outside in bright sunlight for an extended period while your pupils are dilated can indeed increase the risk of discomfort and potential damage. It is generally recommended to wear sunglasses that offer UV protection when your pupils are dilated, as this can help shield your eyes from harmful rays and reduce glare. If you find yourself needing to be outdoors after dilation, consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat and seeking shaded areas whenever possible.

Given your concerns about your eye health, especially with your history of retinal degeneration, it is crucial to maintain regular follow-ups with your eye care specialist. They can provide tailored advice based on your specific conditions and help monitor any changes in your vision or eye health. If you have any ongoing symptoms or new concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider, even if it’s outside of regular office hours. Many hospitals have ophthalmologists available for emergencies, and it’s better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your vision.

In summary, while pupil dilation is a routine part of eye exams, it is essential to be mindful of the duration of its effects and the precautions needed to protect your eyes during this time. Always prioritize your eye health and seek professional guidance whenever you have concerns.
