Red labia minora
Hello, I finished my menstrual period about three days ago, and the next day I suddenly felt some itching in my genital area, so I scratched it.
Over the past few days, I've noticed a light yellow discharge, and then I looked and found that the labia minora is red with a small white bump about the size of a pimple.
It hurts a little when I touch the red area, but I don't feel anything when I don't touch it, and it doesn't affect me otherwise.
So I would like to ask what these symptoms might be and how I can relieve them.
*I have not had sexual intercourse.
Q, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/06/23
Dr. Lin Xinwang reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello: A pelvic examination is more accurate, so it is recommended to visit a gynecology clinic for treatment.
It could be dermatitis or eczema, so please keep the vulvar area clean and dry.

More Info
Understanding redness and discomfort in the labia can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as itching, unusual discharge, and localized pain. Based on your description, it seems that you may be experiencing a common condition known as vulvitis, which is inflammation of the vulva. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections, irritants, or allergic reactions.
Possible Causes
1. Infections:
- Yeast Infection: A common cause of itching and discharge in the vaginal area. Symptoms often include a thick, white discharge and intense itching.
- Bacterial Vaginosis: This condition can cause a fishy odor and a thin, grayish discharge. It is caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina.
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Although you mentioned no sexual activity, it's important to consider that some infections can be asymptomatic or transmitted through non-sexual means.
2. Irritation:
- Contact Dermatitis: This can occur due to soaps, detergents, or hygiene products that irritate the sensitive skin of the vulva.
- Chafing: Friction from clothing or activities can lead to irritation and redness.
3. Allergic Reactions:
- Allergies to products such as latex (from condoms), spermicides, or personal care products can cause localized redness and discomfort.
4. Hormonal Changes:
- Fluctuations in hormones, especially around your menstrual cycle, can lead to changes in vaginal flora and increased sensitivity.
Symptoms Analysis
The presence of a small, white bump could indicate a few things:
- Folliculitis: Inflammation of hair follicles, which can occur if there is irritation or infection.
- Cysts: Such as Bartholin's cysts, which can develop in the vaginal area and may cause discomfort.
- Pearly Penile Papules: These are normal anatomical variations and not a cause for concern.
Recommended Relief Measures
1. Maintain Hygiene:
- Gently wash the area with mild soap and water. Avoid scented products that can irritate the skin.
2. Avoid Irritants:
- Steer clear of tight clothing, harsh soaps, and any products that may cause irritation.
3. Topical Treatments:
- Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can help reduce inflammation and itching. However, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider before using any medication.
4. Warm Compresses:
- Applying a warm compress to the affected area can provide relief from discomfort.
5. Avoid Scratching:
- While it may be tempting, scratching can worsen irritation and lead to infection.
6. Consult a Healthcare Provider:
- If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s crucial to see a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly take samples to rule out infections or other conditions.
Conclusion
While the symptoms you are experiencing may be common and often manageable at home, it is essential to monitor your condition closely. If you notice any changes, such as increased pain, swelling, or the appearance of additional symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Your health and comfort are paramount, and a healthcare provider can offer tailored advice and treatment options based on a thorough evaluation.
