Unexplained tension?
Hello doctor, my goal is to become a physician, so I really enjoy watching surgical videos.
However, recently I've been experiencing something strange; I feel nauseous, have stomach pain, and get anxious while watching these videos.
Today, I even started shaking.
Even watching videos on the TLC channel about lipoma removals or bone screw insertions makes me uncomfortable, which wasn't the case before.
I used to watch brain surgery videos without any issues.
For the past month, I've been feeling nauseous and have the urge to vomit, but I can't, and I've also been experiencing stomach pain.
My daily routine involves waking up early for school, but I don't go to sleep until around 3 or 4 AM.
I would like to know if the symptoms mentioned above are related to my poor lifestyle habits.
My sleep quality has also been poor; I keep having nightmares and wake up with headaches, and I suddenly feel very anxious, almost like having goosebumps.
I'm wondering if improving my lifestyle habits could resolve these issues.

Dear Aspiring Doctor,
Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your recent experiences with anxiety, sleep disturbances, and physical symptoms. It’s commendable that you are pursuing a career in medicine, and understanding the interplay between anxiety, sleep habits, and overall health is crucial for both your personal well-being and your future practice.
From your description, it seems that you are experiencing a combination of anxiety symptoms and sleep-related issues. The feelings of nausea, abdominal pain, and trembling when watching surgical videos, which you previously found interesting, could indicate a heightened sensitivity to stress or anxiety. This change in your response may be linked to various factors, including increased pressure from your studies, personal expectations, or even subconscious fears about the medical profession itself.
Your sleep habits, particularly going to bed at 3 or 4 AM, are likely contributing significantly to your symptoms. Sleep is essential for mental and physical health, and poor sleep quality can exacerbate anxiety and lead to a range of health issues. Research indicates that inadequate sleep can impair cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall stress resilience. The nightmares and morning headaches you mentioned are also common indicators of sleep disturbances, which can further fuel anxiety during the day.
Here are some strategies to improve your sleep hygiene and potentially alleviate your symptoms:
1. Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule: Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock and can improve the quality of your sleep.
2. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine: Engage in calming activities before bed, such as reading, meditating, or taking a warm bath. Avoid screens (phones, computers, TVs) at least an hour before bedtime, as the blue light emitted can interfere with melatonin production and disrupt your sleep cycle.
3. Limit Stimulants: Reduce or eliminate caffeine and nicotine, especially in the afternoon and evening. These substances can interfere with your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.
4. Optimize Your Sleep Environment: Make your bedroom conducive to sleep by keeping it dark, quiet, and cool. Consider using earplugs or a white noise machine if noise is an issue.
5. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Incorporate practices such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or mindfulness meditation into your daily routine. These techniques can help manage anxiety and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep.
6. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days, but try to avoid vigorous activity close to bedtime.
7. Seek Professional Help: If your symptoms persist or worsen, consider consulting a mental health professional. They can provide support and may suggest therapy options, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which is effective for anxiety and sleep disorders.
Improving your sleep habits may indeed help alleviate the physical symptoms you are experiencing. As you work on these changes, be patient with yourself; it can take time to see improvements in both sleep quality and anxiety levels. Remember, it’s essential to prioritize your mental health, especially as you pursue a demanding career in medicine.
Wishing you all the best on your journey to becoming a doctor and in achieving better health and well-being.
Sincerely,
