Sudden increase in visual acuity?
Hello Doctor: Four months ago, during a school eye examination (February 2023), my left eye had a myopia of -2.50 diopters and astigmatism of -2.50 diopters, while my right eye had a myopia of -1.50 diopters and astigmatism of -2.00 diopters.
A few days ago (June), I went to get new glasses, and during the vision test, my left eye's astigmatism increased dramatically to -4.50 diopters.
When using one eye, I experience double vision.
1.
Could this be keratoconus? 2.
Should I go for another eye examination? 3.
Are there any methods to slow down the increase in astigmatism? Thank you for taking the time to respond, Doctor.

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello: It could be keratoconus.
Keratoconus is a condition characterized by the deformation of the cornea, which can lead to vision problems, including a significant increase in myopia and astigmatism.
However, some tests are needed to confirm whether it is keratoconus.
I recommend that you see an ophthalmologist for an examination.
The ophthalmologist will provide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations.

More Info
Understanding a sudden increase in astigmatism can be concerning, especially when there is a significant change in your vision over a short period. In your case, the increase in astigmatism from 250 degrees to 450 degrees in just a few months is notable and warrants further investigation. Let’s address your questions one by one.
1. Could this be keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye, thins and begins to bulge into a cone shape. This irregular shape can lead to increased astigmatism and other vision problems, such as distortion and sensitivity to light. While a sudden increase in astigmatism can be a sign of keratoconus, it is not the only possibility. Other factors, such as changes in the eye's surface or other underlying conditions, can also contribute to increased astigmatism. A comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist, including corneal topography, can help determine if keratoconus or another condition is present.
2. Should I see an eye doctor again?
Yes, it is advisable to see an eye care professional as soon as possible. Given the significant change in your vision, a thorough examination is necessary to rule out any serious conditions, including keratoconus or other corneal irregularities. The eye doctor may perform various tests, including visual acuity tests, refraction tests, and corneal mapping, to assess the shape and thickness of your cornea. Early detection and intervention can be crucial in managing conditions like keratoconus effectively.
3. What methods can help slow the increase in astigmatism?
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent the progression of astigmatism, there are several strategies that may help manage your eye health and potentially slow down changes in your vision:
- Regular Eye Exams: Regular check-ups with your eye doctor can help monitor any changes in your vision and allow for timely interventions.
- Proper Eyewear: Ensure that you are wearing the correct prescription glasses or contact lenses. Incorrect prescriptions can lead to eye strain and may exacerbate vision problems.
- Eye Protection: Protect your eyes from UV light by wearing sunglasses when outdoors. This can help reduce the risk of cataracts and other eye conditions.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, which are beneficial for eye health. Staying hydrated and managing chronic conditions like diabetes can also help maintain good vision.
- Limit Screen Time: Reduce eye strain by taking regular breaks from screens and ensuring proper lighting when reading or working.
- Contact Lens Care: If you wear contact lenses, ensure you follow proper hygiene and care instructions to prevent infections or complications that could affect your vision.
In conclusion, a sudden increase in astigmatism should not be taken lightly. It is essential to consult with an eye care professional to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can make a significant difference in managing your vision and maintaining eye health.
