Is Salty Fluid After Wisdom Tooth Extraction Normal? Healing Signs - Dentistry

Continuous fluid discharge after the extraction of a lower horizontal wisdom tooth?

Four days after having my wisdom teeth removed, I feel a salty sensation at the wound site.
When I wake up, my tongue around the wisdom tooth area appears yellow (with no pain at all).
I would like to know if this is a normal situation for wound healing.
(Note: Collagen was placed in the wound.) The doctor prescribed a three-day course of antibiotics and pain medication, which I have taken on schedule, but I am still very concerned about this situation.
Thank you, doctor, for taking the time to respond!

Hello, it is recommended to return for a follow-up appointment with your physician for an examination immediately after completing the three-day course of medication, and to have the stitches removed one week later.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is not uncommon to experience various sensations and changes in the mouth as part of the healing process. The salty taste you are experiencing around the extraction site could be attributed to several factors, and while it may be concerning, it is often a normal part of recovery.

Firstly, the presence of a salty taste can be due to the healing process itself. As the body begins to repair the tissue around the extraction site, it produces fluids that may have a salty taste. This is especially true if there is any minor bleeding or oozing from the site, which can mix with saliva and create a salty flavor. Additionally, if you have been prescribed antibiotics, they can sometimes alter your taste perception or lead to changes in your oral environment, contributing to unusual tastes.

The yellow coloration on your tongue, particularly if it is localized around the area of the extraction, could be due to several reasons. It may indicate the presence of dead cells, bacteria, or food particles that have accumulated in the area. This is not uncommon after surgery, especially if you are unable to maintain your usual oral hygiene routine immediately following the procedure. However, if the yellow color persists or is accompanied by a foul odor, it could indicate an infection or other complications that may require attention.

Regarding the healing process, it is essential to monitor the extraction site for signs of proper healing. These signs include:
1. Reduction of Swelling and Discomfort: Swelling should gradually decrease over the first few days post-surgery, and any discomfort should lessen as well.

2. Formation of a Blood Clot: A blood clot typically forms in the socket where the tooth was removed. This clot is crucial for healing and should not be disturbed. If the clot dislodges, it can lead to a painful condition known as dry socket.

3. Absence of Severe Pain: While some discomfort is expected, severe pain that does not improve with pain medication may indicate a complication.

4. No Signs of Infection: Watch for symptoms such as increased redness, swelling, pus, or a fever, which could suggest an infection.

5. Gradual Return to Normal Function: You should be able to resume normal activities, including eating and speaking, as healing progresses.

Since you mentioned that you have been taking antibiotics and pain medication as prescribed, it is crucial to continue following your doctor's instructions. If you notice any worsening of symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or the presence of pus, it is advisable to contact your dentist or oral surgeon for further evaluation.

In conclusion, while the salty taste and yellow coloration on your tongue can be concerning, they may be part of the normal healing process after wisdom tooth extraction. However, it is always best to err on the side of caution and consult your healthcare provider if you have any doubts or if your symptoms change. They can provide personalized advice and ensure that your recovery is proceeding as expected.
