Suspected eye flashes?
Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing floaters since April.
I went to a clinic for a dilated eye exam, and the doctor said there were no issues with my retina.
In mid-June, I noticed flashes of light when my eyes were closed.
After another dilated eye exam, I was again told there were no problems.
Recently, while at work, I have been feeling like the lights are flickering as if there is an unstable voltage, dimming quickly and then returning to normal.
At first, I didn't pay much attention to it, but it has happened again after a short while.
However, when I asked my colleagues, they said they didn't notice anything unusual.
I would like to ask: 1.
Does this sensation of lights flickering, similar to unstable voltage, count as visual flashes? (P.S.
It seems to occur only in that work environment; I haven't experienced anything similar at home, outside, or in other places.) 2.
Is there a need for another dilated eye exam? (P.S.
The floaters have not increased.) Thank you for your response, Doctor.
I tend to be a very anxious person, especially since the onset of floaters, which makes me quite nervous about my eyes.
I hope you can clarify this for me.
Thank you!

Hello: 1.
The sensation you described, similar to a momentary dimming of a light due to unstable voltage followed by a return to normal, may be related to visual flashes.
Visual flashes are brief sensations of light that can occur in different parts of the visual system.
However, since I cannot examine your eyes directly, I recommend discussing this situation with your primary care physician, who can better assess and explain this phenomenon.
2.
Based on your description, you recently underwent a dilated eye exam and no issues were found.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you continue to feel concerned about this situation, it is best to consult your ophthalmologist again.
This will allow them to evaluate whether further examination is necessary based on your specific circumstances.
If the examination shows no problems, there is no need to remain anxious.

Flashing lights in vision can be a concerning symptom, especially for individuals who have experienced other visual disturbances such as floaters. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing a variety of visual phenomena, including flashes of light and a flickering sensation similar to unstable electrical lighting. Let's break down your concerns and provide some insights into potential causes and when to seek further medical attention.
1. Understanding the Flashing Lights: The sensation you describe, where lights appear to flicker or dim momentarily, can indeed be classified as a type of visual disturbance. This phenomenon can occur due to several reasons, including retinal issues, vitreous changes, or even neurological factors. In your case, since you mentioned that this sensation primarily occurs in a specific work environment and not elsewhere, it could be related to environmental factors such as lighting conditions or even the stress associated with your work setting. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate visual disturbances, leading to heightened awareness of symptoms that might otherwise go unnoticed.
2. Possible Causes:
- Vitreous Detachment: Given your history of floaters, it is possible that changes in the vitreous gel in your eye are causing these flashes. As the vitreous pulls away from the retina, it can create sensations of light or flashes.
- Retinal Issues: Although your previous examinations indicated no retinal problems, it is essential to remain vigilant. Flashes can sometimes indicate retinal tears or detachment, which require immediate attention.
- Environmental Factors: The specific lighting conditions at your workplace could also play a role. Flickering lights or glare from screens can create visual disturbances that may not be present in other settings.
- Neurological Factors: In some cases, visual disturbances can stem from neurological issues, including migraines or other conditions affecting the brain's visual processing areas.
3. When to Seek Help: Since you have already undergone dilated eye examinations that showed no significant issues, it may not be necessary to repeat these tests immediately, especially if your floaters have not increased. However, if you experience any of the following, you should seek medical attention promptly:
- A sudden increase in the number of floaters or flashes.
- A shadow or curtain effect in your peripheral vision.
- Significant changes in your overall vision, such as blurriness or loss of vision.
- Any new symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or other neurological signs.
4. Managing Anxiety: It's understandable to feel anxious about your vision, especially after experiencing floaters and flashes. It may be helpful to discuss your concerns with a healthcare professional who can provide reassurance and possibly refer you to a specialist if needed. Additionally, practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or mindfulness, can help manage anxiety related to your symptoms.
In conclusion, while the sensations you are experiencing may be benign, it is crucial to remain observant and proactive about your eye health. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation. Your eye health is important, and staying informed about your symptoms will empower you to take the necessary steps to ensure your vision remains clear and healthy.
