Issues with wound iodine?
Last night, I scratched two 1 cm long narrow wounds on my toe joints due to itching.
Today, while I was at the park with my cousin, she accidentally stepped on the wounds, which had dirt and sand on them.
I first rinsed them with water from a handheld shower, then I bought saline solution to rinse them again.
Since I didn't have enough cotton swabs, I applied povidone-iodine by dripping it, but it seems I used too much.
After letting it sit for a few minutes, I rinsed it off with saline solution, but there is still a faint yellow color remaining.
Will this yellow color fade away with skin metabolism? Will the presence of this yellow color on the wound affect the healing process? I also have asthma, premature ovarian failure, and a retinal tear.

Gently rinsing the wound with saline solution daily should help cleanse it without significantly affecting the healing process.

When it comes to the use of Betadine (povidone-iodine) on wounds, there are several important considerations regarding its residue, healing implications, and potential effects on individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Betadine is commonly used as an antiseptic for minor cuts and abrasions due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. However, the yellowish tint that you observe after applying Betadine is a result of the iodine in the solution. This residue is generally not harmful and will typically fade over time as the skin naturally exfoliates and heals. In most cases, the yellow color does not impede the healing process of the wound itself. The skin has a remarkable ability to regenerate, and any residual Betadine will gradually be metabolized and removed by the body.
However, it is crucial to ensure that the wound is properly cleaned and that any foreign materials, such as dirt or sand, are thoroughly removed. You mentioned that you rinsed the wound with saline solution after using Betadine, which is a good practice. It is advisable to avoid excessive application of antiseptics, as overuse can lead to irritation or allergic reactions, particularly in sensitive individuals or those with underlying conditions.
In your case, since you have asthma and ovarian insufficiency, it is essential to monitor for any signs of allergic reactions or increased irritation at the wound site. If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
Regarding the healing implications, while Betadine is effective in preventing infection, it is important to allow the wound to breathe and not to occlude it with excessive antiseptic application. Keeping the wound clean and covered with a sterile bandage can help protect it from further injury and contamination, especially since you experienced a secondary injury when your cousin stepped on it.
In summary, the yellow residue from Betadine is generally harmless and will fade with time. It should not significantly affect the healing of your wound, provided that it is kept clean and protected. However, if you have any concerns about the healing process or if the wound shows signs of infection, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Always remember to follow up with your healthcare provider, especially considering your existing health conditions, to ensure that your wound care is appropriate and effective.
