Intermittent pulsations in the lower abdomen?
Hello, doctor.
Recently, I have been experiencing intermittent pulsations in my lower abdomen, below the navel, about 3 to 4 times a day.
There is no pain associated with it.
I usually take anti-anxiety medication and anti-arrhythmic medication.
What could be the cause of this? What tests should I undergo? Thank you.

Intermittent pulsations in the lower abdomen can be concerning, especially when they occur frequently and without accompanying pain. It's important to understand that the sensation of pulsation may arise from various sources, including muscular contractions, vascular activity, or gastrointestinal movements.
1. Possible Causes:
- Muscle Contractions: The abdominal muscles can sometimes contract involuntarily, leading to a sensation of pulsation. This is often benign and can be related to stress, anxiety, or even physical activity.
- Bowel Activity: The intestines are constantly moving to facilitate digestion and the passage of food. This peristaltic movement can sometimes be felt as a pulsation, particularly if the bowel is more active than usual.
- Blood Vessel Pulsation: The aorta, which runs through the abdomen, can sometimes be felt as a pulsation, especially in thin individuals. This is generally normal but can be more pronounced in certain conditions.
- Nerve Sensitivity: Anxiety and stress can heighten sensitivity to bodily sensations, making normal movements feel more pronounced.
2. Medication Effects: You mentioned that you are taking anti-anxiety medication and anti-arrhythmic drugs. Some medications can have side effects that affect gastrointestinal motility or cause muscle spasms, which might contribute to the sensations you are experiencing.
3. When to Seek Medical Attention: While intermittent pulsations without pain are often benign, you should seek medical advice if:
- The pulsations become more frequent or intense.
- You experience any new symptoms such as pain, swelling, changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss.
- You have a history of abdominal issues or vascular problems.
4. Recommended Tests: If you decide to consult a healthcare provider, they may recommend:
- Physical Examination: A thorough examination can help identify any palpable masses or abnormalities.
- Ultrasound: This imaging test can help visualize the abdominal organs and blood vessels to rule out any structural issues.
- CT Scan: If necessary, a CT scan can provide more detailed images of the abdomen.
- Blood Tests: These can help assess overall health and check for any underlying conditions.
5. Lifestyle Considerations: In the meantime, consider monitoring your diet and hydration, as gastrointestinal discomfort can sometimes be alleviated by dietary changes. Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, managing stress through relaxation techniques, and ensuring regular physical activity can also be beneficial.
In conclusion, while intermittent pulsations in the lower abdomen can be benign, it is always wise to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions, especially given your medication history. They can provide personalized advice and determine if further investigation is necessary.
