Ovulatory bleeding still occurs with the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD)?
The menstrual period was from July 2 to July 6, and a contraceptive device (IUD) was inserted on the third day of the period, July 4.
Intercourse occurred on July 6 and July 9 without a condom (no ejaculation inside).
The IUD was removed for 2 hours during intercourse and then reinserted.
The expected ovulation period was from July 12 to July 15, during which there was slight lower abdominal bloating and pain.
On July 15, there was suspected ovulation bleeding (white discharge with blood streaks, not continuous bleeding).
Is it possible to experience discomfort and bleeding during the ovulation period even after having an IUD inserted? What is the likelihood of pregnancy in this situation?
Q, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/07/15

Hello, the user: It is recommended to use additional contraceptive methods during the first week of using an IUD.
Bleeding may be due to hormonal imbalance or the presence of the IUD.
However, bleeding can also occur in early pregnancy or around the time of implantation.
Therefore, if menstruation is more than a week late, it is advisable to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
After the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD), it is indeed possible to experience ovulation symptoms and some bleeding. The IUD is a highly effective form of contraception, but it does not eliminate the possibility of ovulation or the associated symptoms.
When you mention experiencing symptoms such as lower abdominal swelling and pain around your expected ovulation period, this is quite common. Many women report ovulation symptoms, which can include mild cramping or discomfort in the lower abdomen, often referred to as mittelschmerz. This is due to the hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle, and it can happen even when an IUD is in place.
Regarding the bleeding you described on July 15, which consisted of white discharge mixed with blood, this could be attributed to several factors. After IUD insertion, it is not unusual for women to experience irregular bleeding or spotting as their body adjusts to the device. This is particularly common in the first few months following insertion. The bleeding you observed could be a result of ovulation, especially if it was light and not prolonged.
As for the concern about pregnancy, while the IUD is designed to prevent pregnancy, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. The risk of pregnancy is significantly reduced with an IUD, but it is not entirely eliminated. The fact that you had unprotected intercourse shortly after the IUD insertion does raise some questions, but if the IUD was properly placed and you have not experienced any signs of pregnancy (such as a missed period, nausea, or breast tenderness), the likelihood of pregnancy is low.
However, if you are experiencing unusual symptoms or if the bleeding persists or becomes heavy, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can perform an examination to ensure that the IUD is correctly positioned and that there are no other underlying issues.
In summary, experiencing ovulation symptoms and some bleeding after IUD insertion is not uncommon. The IUD does not prevent ovulation, and the symptoms you are experiencing could be related to your natural menstrual cycle. If you have concerns about pregnancy or your symptoms, it is always best to seek medical advice for peace of mind and proper care.
