Bowel issues, fecal problems, gastrointestinal issues?

Hello doctor, recently I've been feeling something unusual with my gastrointestinal system.
I've been having difficulty with bowel movements; I can barely pass gas or release a small amount of mucus, and sometimes I can only manage to have a small stool.
The stool is soft, somewhat flattened, and yellow-brown without any blood.
I experience pain when I apply pressure to my lower right abdomen (previously, my stools were black, hard, and pellet-like).
I often feel the urge to go to the bathroom but can't seem to do so.
These symptoms started about a week ago, and despite trying to drink more water, eat more vegetables, and consume yogurt, there hasn't been any improvement.
I'm really worried that I might have cancer...

More Info

It sounds like you're experiencing a range of gastrointestinal symptoms that can be quite distressing. Based on your description, it seems you are dealing with constipation, abdominal pain, and changes in your bowel movements. Let's break down these symptoms and discuss potential causes and management strategies.

Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Constipation: You mentioned difficulty in having bowel movements, with stools that are soft, flat, and sometimes accompanied by mucus. Constipation is often defined as having fewer than three bowel movements per week, and it can be caused by a variety of factors including diet, hydration, physical activity, and stress.
2. Abdominal Pain: The pain you feel in your right lower abdomen, especially when pressing, could be related to several issues. It might be due to constipation itself, as impacted stool can cause discomfort and pain in the abdomen. However, localized pain can also indicate other conditions, such as appendicitis, ovarian issues (in females), or even gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

3. Changes in Stool Characteristics: The changes in your stool, such as the color and consistency, are important indicators. Yellow-brown stools that are soft and flat can suggest that the stool is not forming properly, often due to insufficient fiber intake or dehydration. The absence of blood is a positive sign, but persistent changes warrant further investigation.

Potential Causes
Given your symptoms, several potential causes could be considered:
- Dietary Factors: Insufficient fiber intake can lead to constipation. While you mentioned trying to eat more vegetables and drink yogurt, it might be beneficial to ensure you're consuming a variety of fiber-rich foods, including whole grains, fruits, and legumes.

- Hydration: Adequate water intake is crucial for preventing constipation. While you are trying to drink more water, ensure that you are consuming enough fluids throughout the day.

- Physical Activity: Regular physical activity can help stimulate bowel movements. If your lifestyle is relatively sedentary, incorporating more movement could be beneficial.

- Stress and Anxiety: Psychological factors can significantly impact gastrointestinal function. Stress and anxiety can lead to changes in bowel habits and may exacerbate symptoms of IBS.

- Underlying Conditions: While less common, conditions such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, or gastrointestinal disorders (like IBS or inflammatory bowel disease) could contribute to your symptoms.

Recommendations
1. Dietary Adjustments: Continue to focus on a high-fiber diet, aiming for at least 25-30 grams of fiber daily. Incorporate foods like fruits (berries, apples), vegetables (broccoli, carrots), whole grains (oats, brown rice), and legumes (beans, lentils).

2. Hydration: Aim for at least 8-10 cups of water daily. If you're physically active or live in a hot climate, you may need even more.

3. Physical Activity: Try to engage in regular exercise, such as walking, jogging, or yoga, which can help stimulate digestion and alleviate constipation.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, dietary intake, and bowel habits. This can help identify patterns and triggers.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist despite these changes, or if you experience severe pain, weight loss, or any alarming symptoms, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend further testing, such as blood tests or imaging studies, to rule out any serious conditions.

Conclusion
While your symptoms can be concerning, many cases of constipation and abdominal pain can be managed effectively with lifestyle changes. However, it is essential to remain vigilant and seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve or worsen. Remember, early intervention can lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
