Throat issues

Hello Doctor: I kissed my boyfriend, including French kissing.
On the first to third day, there were no issues, but by the fourth day, I started to feel discomfort in my throat, with pain on both sides when swallowing saliva.
After that, I experienced dizziness, fatigue, nasal congestion with a bit of runny nose, joint pain when exposed to wind, and I noticed some blister-like bumps near my throat.
A few days ago, I felt a foreign body sensation in my throat and had difficulty breathing.
What could these symptoms indicate? What treatment do I need?

Xu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/07/18

It sounds like you're experiencing a range of symptoms that could be related to a viral or bacterial infection, possibly exacerbated by recent kissing. The symptoms you've described—throat discomfort, pain when swallowing, dizziness, fatigue, nasal congestion, and the presence of bumps in your throat—are indicative of a few potential conditions.

One possibility is viral pharyngitis, which is often caused by viruses such as the common cold or influenza. This condition can lead to inflammation of the throat, resulting in pain, swelling, and the sensation of having something stuck in your throat. The bumps you mentioned could be enlarged lymph nodes or tonsils, which are common responses to infection.

Another possibility is streptococcal pharyngitis, commonly known as strep throat. This bacterial infection can cause severe throat pain, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Strep throat is contagious and can be transmitted through direct contact, such as kissing, or through respiratory droplets.

Given your symptoms, here are some steps you can take for treatment and relief:
1. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Warm liquids, such as herbal teas or broths, can soothe your throat.

2. Rest: Ensure you get adequate rest to help your body fight off the infection.

3. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Non-prescription medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) can help alleviate throat pain and reduce fever.

4. Saltwater Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce throat inflammation and discomfort.

5. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your room can keep the air moist, which may help soothe your throat and nasal passages.

6. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat discomfort.

7. Seek Medical Attention: If your symptoms persist for more than a few days, worsen, or if you develop a high fever, it’s important to see a healthcare provider. They may perform a throat swab to test for strep throat or other infections and prescribe antibiotics if necessary.

8. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any new symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, severe headache, or rash, and seek immediate medical attention if they occur.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to a common viral infection, they could also indicate a bacterial infection like strep throat. It's crucial to monitor your condition and consult a healthcare professional if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and prevent complications.
