Pregnancy test question + missed period?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask: ▪️ I had sexual intercourse on June 21 and July 7, both times using condoms.
▪️ My last menstrual period ended on June 11, and I have not had my period for 39 days as of July 20.
I have gastrointestinal issues, experiencing diarrhea, and my sleep schedule is disrupted.
During this time, I noticed some hormonal changes with yellow-green/white discharge, and my breasts are itchy with some scratches, possibly due to sweating and heat.
▪️ I took a pregnancy test on July 20, which was negative.
At that time, I had diarrhea in the morning, and I did urinate.
Could the test results be affected?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the failure rate of contraception using condoms throughout the entire process is over 5%, which makes it less reliable compared to other methods.
The situation mentioned is unlikely to affect the test results, so it is recommended that if your period does not arrive, it is best to consult a physician.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
When it comes to understanding delayed periods and negative pregnancy test results, several factors need to be considered. In your case, you mentioned having sexual intercourse on June 21 and July 7, both times using condoms, and your last menstrual period ended on June 11. Now, you are experiencing a delay of 39 days since your last period, which is quite significant.
First, it's important to note that pregnancy tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. If you took a pregnancy test on July 20 and it was negative, it suggests that either you are not pregnant or that the test was taken too early for accurate results.
Several factors can contribute to a delayed period aside from pregnancy:
1. Stress and Lifestyle Changes: You mentioned having gastrointestinal issues and irregular sleep patterns. Stress and changes in your daily routine can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. Stress can lead to hormonal imbalances that may delay ovulation and, consequently, your period.
2. Health Issues: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can also cause irregularities in your menstrual cycle. If you have a history of gastrointestinal problems, it’s possible that these could be affecting your overall health and hormonal balance.
3. Testing Accuracy: The accuracy of a home pregnancy test can be influenced by several factors, including the timing of the test, the concentration of urine, and even the quality of the test itself. If you took the test after a night of drinking fluids or if you had diarrhea, it could dilute your urine, potentially affecting the test's accuracy. It’s generally recommended to take a pregnancy test with the first morning urine, as it tends to have the highest concentration of hCG.
4. Hormonal Fluctuations: Your body goes through various hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle. If there are fluctuations in hormones due to stress, illness, or other factors, it might lead to a delayed period without pregnancy.
Given your situation, if your period does not arrive soon, it would be advisable to take another pregnancy test, preferably a week after the first one, to allow for any potential hCG buildup if you are indeed pregnant. If the second test is also negative and your period still does not come, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than home tests, or they may want to investigate other potential causes for your delayed period.
In summary, while the negative pregnancy test suggests you are likely not pregnant, the delay in your menstrual cycle could be attributed to stress, lifestyle changes, or underlying health issues. Monitoring your symptoms and consulting with a healthcare professional if your period does not resume will provide you with the best course of action.
