White protrusions inside the nostrils?

Hello Doctor: In May of this year, I discovered a white, elastic protrusion inside my nostril that does not cause any discomfort when pressed.
I visited a doctor who prescribed me Neomycin ointment, but there has been no improvement.
Since there are no significant symptoms, I did not return for a follow-up after finishing the ointment.
I took two pictures, but I'm not sure if they are clear enough: https://i.imgur.com/Rt7MTJt.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/bR8VQcf.jpeg.
I would like to ask if I need to seek medical attention for this condition.
There have been no symptoms, but I can feel this growth when I pick my nose.
Is it a polyp? Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. Li Jiaxuan reply Otolaryngology

If the mass has not disappeared, it is likely not a cyst.
Based on the appearance observed in the photo, there are no signs of malignant transformation; however, it is recommended to consult an otolaryngologist.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding white bumps inside the nostril can be concerning, especially when they persist without clear symptoms. Based on your description, it sounds like you have a white, elastic bump in your nostril that has not changed significantly despite treatment with a topical antibiotic (Neomycin).
Firstly, it’s important to clarify that such bumps can arise from various causes, including nasal polyps, cysts, or even benign tumors. Nasal polyps are soft, painless growths that can develop in the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses due to chronic inflammation. They are often associated with conditions like allergies, asthma, or chronic sinusitis. Cysts, on the other hand, are fluid-filled sacs that can also form in the nasal cavity and may present as bumps.

Given that you have not experienced any pain or other symptoms, it is possible that this bump is benign. However, the fact that it has not resolved with topical treatment suggests that further evaluation may be warranted. Here are some considerations regarding when to seek medical advice:
1. Duration and Change: If the bump has been present for several months without any change in size or symptoms, it may be worth revisiting a healthcare provider. Persistent lesions that do not respond to treatment should be evaluated to rule out any underlying issues.

2. Symptoms: While you mentioned that you have not experienced symptoms, keep an eye out for any changes. Symptoms such as bleeding, increased size, pain, or discharge could indicate a need for further investigation.

3. Physical Examination: A healthcare provider, particularly an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, can perform a thorough examination. They may use a nasal endoscope to visualize the bump more clearly and determine its nature.

4. Imaging or Biopsy: If the bump appears suspicious or does not respond to conservative treatment, your doctor may recommend imaging studies (like a CT scan) or a biopsy to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

5. Self-Care and Monitoring: In the meantime, avoid picking at the bump, as this can lead to irritation or infection. Monitor for any changes in size or symptoms, and maintain good nasal hygiene.

In summary, while the absence of symptoms is reassuring, the persistence of the bump warrants further evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to unusual growths in the body. If you have any concerns or if the bump changes in any way, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
