Delayed menstruation?
Hello doctor, my girlfriend's menstrual period ended on May 24.
Three days after it ended, we had unprotected intercourse, but there was no ejaculation (neither inside nor outside).
Her period came on June 20 and lasted for seven days.
However, her period for July is already two days late.
Could this be caused by hormonal imbalance? It shouldn't be due to pregnancy, right? Thank you for your help in clarifying this.
🙏

Hello, it is recommended to practice safe behaviors to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections, while also preventing unintended pregnancies.
Please observe your partner's menstrual cycle; if there is a delay, you can take a home pregnancy test or visit a gynecologist for confirmation.
Thank you.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of concern for many women, especially when it deviates from their regular cycle. In your case, your girlfriend experienced her last menstrual period on May 24, and after a sexual encounter without ejaculation, her next period was expected around June 20 but has now been delayed by two days. Let's explore the possible causes and concerns related to this situation.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, lifestyle changes, and even environmental factors. In women, the average menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, with most women experiencing cycles of about 28 days. However, it is not uncommon for cycles to vary, especially as women approach their late 30s and 40s, when perimenopause may begin to affect regularity.
Given that your girlfriend's last period was on May 24 and she had a sexual encounter shortly after, it is understandable to consider the possibility of pregnancy. However, since there was no ejaculation, the likelihood of pregnancy is significantly reduced. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for several days, but without ejaculation, the risk is minimal. If there are concerns about pregnancy, a home pregnancy test can provide clarity. These tests are generally reliable and can detect pregnancy as early as the first day of a missed period.
Regarding the delay in menstruation, it is possible that this could be attributed to hormonal imbalances. Stress, changes in routine, diet, or exercise can all impact the hypothalamus, which regulates the menstrual cycle. If your girlfriend has been experiencing any significant stress or changes in her lifestyle, this could be a contributing factor to her delayed period. Additionally, conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can also lead to irregularities in the menstrual cycle.
In your case, since the delay is only two days, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. Many women experience occasional delays in their menstrual cycles without any underlying health issues. However, if the delay extends beyond a week or if she experiences other symptoms such as severe pain, unusual discharge, or significant changes in her health, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
In summary, while the delay in your girlfriend's menstruation could be related to hormonal fluctuations or stress, the lack of ejaculation during intercourse significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy. If the delay continues or if there are any concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice would be the best course of action. Regular check-ups and open communication about menstrual health can help in managing any concerns related to delayed menstruation.
