Can I get pregnant?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about an encounter on July 17th.
We had intercourse using a condom, and a post-coital check showed no tears.
July 18th was my ovulation period, and on that day, I experienced some bleeding along with symptoms of dizziness and coughing that led to dry heaving.
On July 27th and 28th, I felt pain in my lower abdomen.
My period is expected to start on August 1st.
I would like to know if this could indicate pregnancy.
Thank you, doctor.

Sophia, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/07/28

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

It sounds like you have a lot of questions regarding the possibility of pregnancy and the symptoms you are experiencing. Let's break down your situation and provide some clarity.

Based on your timeline, you had intercourse on July 17, which was close to your ovulation period on July 18. Since you mentioned that you used a condom and checked for any breaks, the likelihood of pregnancy is relatively low, especially if the condom was intact. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, so there is still a small chance of pregnancy.

You mentioned experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, a cough that leads to dry heaving, and lower abdominal discomfort around July 27-28. These symptoms can be associated with various conditions, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), early pregnancy symptoms, or even other health issues unrelated to pregnancy.
1. Dizziness: This can be caused by hormonal changes, dehydration, or even anxiety. If it persists, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider.

2. Coughing and Dry Heaving: These symptoms could be due to a respiratory infection or allergies. If you are experiencing persistent coughing, it might be worth seeing a doctor to rule out any underlying issues.

3. Lower Abdominal Pain: This could be related to ovulation pain (also known as mittelschmerz), PMS, or early pregnancy. If the pain is severe or accompanied by other concerning symptoms (like heavy bleeding), you should seek medical attention.

Your expected period is on August 1. If your period is late, the most reliable way to determine if you are pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. It’s best to take the test after your missed period for the most accurate result.

In summary, while your symptoms could indicate pregnancy, they could also be attributed to other factors. If your period does not arrive as expected, consider taking a pregnancy test for confirmation. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or health, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and care.
Remember, early prenatal care is crucial if you are pregnant, so if you do test positive, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your options and ensure a healthy pregnancy.
