Can elevated liver enzymes affect sexual function?

A few days ago, I visited a urologist due to issues related to sexual function and had blood tests done.
Upon returning for a follow-up, the test results showed that all values were within normal ranges except for GOT and GPT, which were elevated (GOT 86, GPT 68).
I would like to know if liver function abnormalities can affect sexual function.
Recently, I started weight training and have been taking related supplements (arginine, whey protein, multivitamins).
Could these also be contributing to the elevated liver enzymes? I do consume alcohol, but infrequently, and I tend to stay up late and enjoy spicy food.

Hello: Generally, mild liver function abnormalities do not cause sexual dysfunction.
It is recommended to consult a urologist to determine the cause.

Elevated liver enzymes, specifically as indicated by elevated levels of GOT (AST) and GPT (ALT), can indeed have implications for sexual function, although the relationship is not always direct or straightforward. The liver plays a crucial role in metabolizing hormones, including sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. When liver function is impaired, it can lead to hormonal imbalances that may affect sexual health.

In your case, the elevated liver enzymes (GOT 86 and GPT 68) suggest some level of liver dysfunction. This could be due to various factors, including alcohol consumption, dietary habits, and the use of supplements. While you mentioned that your alcohol intake is low, even occasional drinking can impact liver health, especially if combined with other stressors like lack of sleep and a high-sodium diet (often associated with spicy foods).
Additionally, the supplements you are taking, such as arginine and whey protein, can also influence liver function. While these supplements are generally safe for most individuals, excessive intake or underlying liver conditions can lead to elevated enzyme levels. It’s essential to consider the dosage and frequency of these supplements, as well as any other medications or substances you may be consuming.

Regarding your concerns about sexual function, mild liver dysfunction is not typically associated with significant sexual dysfunction. However, if the liver condition worsens or if there is a more severe underlying issue, it could potentially lead to decreased libido or erectile dysfunction due to hormonal imbalances. For instance, liver disease can lead to increased estrogen levels in men, which may contribute to conditions like gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue) and reduced testosterone levels, both of which can affect sexual function.

It’s also worth noting that stress, anxiety, and lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep can significantly impact sexual health. The physical and psychological aspects of sexual function are closely intertwined, and addressing lifestyle factors may help improve both liver health and sexual function.

Given your situation, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further tests to assess liver function and investigate the underlying causes of the elevated enzymes. Additionally, discussing your sexual health concerns with a urologist or an endocrinologist may provide further insights into how your liver health is impacting your sexual function.

In summary, while elevated liver enzymes can potentially affect sexual function, the relationship is complex and influenced by various factors, including hormonal balance, lifestyle choices, and overall health. It is essential to monitor your liver health closely and make necessary lifestyle adjustments to support both liver function and sexual health. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare providers will be key in managing these concerns effectively.
