Probability of Pregnancy During Menstruation
Hello Doctor: My period started on July 26.
On July 28 and 29, I had sexual intercourse with low menstrual flow without using a condom, and there was also external ejaculation followed by a few thrusts inside the vagina.
I would like to know if there is a possibility of pregnancy.
When is the earliest I can take a pregnancy test to confirm?
Miss Hsieh, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/08/02
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the questioner: There is a possibility of pregnancy even if ejaculation has not occurred during intercourse, as pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm.
It is recommended to check for pregnancy if your period is more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant during your period, the answer is nuanced. While it is less likely to conceive during menstruation, it is not impossible. Understanding the menstrual cycle and the timing of ovulation is crucial in assessing the risks of pregnancy during this time.
The menstrual cycle typically lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation usually occurs around the midpoint of the cycle, approximately 14 days before the start of the next period. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that if you have unprotected sex towards the end of your period, and you ovulate shortly after, there is a possibility of sperm being present when the egg is released.
In your case, since your period started on July 26 and you had unprotected intercourse on July 28 and 29, it is possible that sperm could survive until ovulation, depending on the length of your cycle and when you typically ovulate. If you have a shorter cycle (e.g., 21-24 days), ovulation could occur soon after your period ends, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy. Conversely, if you have a longer cycle, the chances decrease.
Regarding testing for pregnancy, the earliest you can reliably test for pregnancy is typically about one week after your missed period. This is because pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants into the uterus. If you had your period on July 26, you would expect your next period around August 23. Therefore, the earliest you could take a home pregnancy test would be around August 30 for the most accurate results.
If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it is advisable to wait until after your expected period to take a test. If you test too early, you may receive a false negative result. If your period is late and you continue to receive negative test results, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, while the chances of getting pregnant during your period are low, they are not zero. If you are sexually active and not using contraception, it is always wise to consider the possibility of pregnancy and to use protection if you wish to avoid it. If you have further questions or concerns about your menstrual cycle, ovulation, or pregnancy testing, I recommend discussing them with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.
