Distressing nasal conditions
I have been suffering from nasal issues for about the last three months.
In the morning, I feel fine, but by noon, my nasal discharge gradually increases, and I often feel congested and have difficulty breathing.
I have had similar experiences in the past, and a colleague recommended applying a medication called "Lico Tong" (likely referring to a topical antibiotic) inside my nose, which helped me recover quickly.
However, I later heard that this medication contains steroids, so I am hesitant to use it again.
Is it really not advisable to use it?
I went to an ENT specialist, and during my first visit, the doctor prescribed Minlife, Tnyh, Doxycycline, Chemix1, Mucosolvan, and KovinTong tablets, a total of six medications.
The next day, my nasal discharge was completely gone, but by the third day, I started to smell a strange odor that made me feel dizzy and extremely uncomfortable.
After taking the medications for five days, I stopped due to the discomfort, and two days later, my old symptoms returned.
I then visited another clinic, where the doctor prescribed Gacon 50mg, Keflor 250mg, and Ambroxol 30mg.
I took these medications for 12 days, but my condition did not seem to improve.
The doctor advised me to stop the medication for a week, saying that I would gradually get better.
It has now been a week, but my symptoms persist.
When I sleep on one side, that nostril becomes blocked, and by the next afternoon, I experience nasal discharge and difficulty breathing, which is very uncomfortable!
Should I return to see a doctor? What exactly is my condition? Some people have suggested using saline nasal rinses or steam inhalation, while others have recommended taking propolis.
I've also heard that rinsing with Tabasco sauce mixed with warm water is effective.
Is this true? I feel lost and unsure of what to do.
Please provide guidance; I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello: The nose is the primary gateway for human respiration, and any issues with this gateway can indeed be quite bothersome.
Since your nasal condition has persisted for three months, if symptoms continue despite treatment, it may have become chronic.
I recommend that you visit a larger hospital to consult with an otolaryngologist and inquire about the need for X-ray or CT scans.
Nasal saline irrigation or steam inhalation can be beneficial if performed correctly.
As for other home remedies, it is advisable to seek scientific validation before use, as the nose is your own, wouldn't you agree? Best wishes from Dr.

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing persistent nasal issues that have been quite bothersome for you over the past few months. Your symptoms, including increased nasal mucus, difficulty breathing, and a strange smell, suggest that you may be dealing with a form of rhinitis, which can be allergic, non-allergic, or even related to sinus issues. Let's break down your situation and explore potential solutions.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Nasal Congestion and Mucus Production: The fact that your symptoms worsen throughout the day indicates that there may be an underlying inflammatory process in your nasal passages. This could be due to allergies, chronic rhinitis, or even sinusitis. Allergic rhinitis is often triggered by environmental factors such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, while non-allergic rhinitis can be caused by irritants like smoke or strong odors.
2. Strange Smell and Discomfort: The unusual smell you are experiencing could be a sign of post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of your throat, or it could indicate a sinus infection. This can lead to a feeling of pressure and discomfort in the nasal and sinus areas.
3. Previous Treatments: You mentioned using a nasal ointment that contains steroids, which can be effective for reducing inflammation but should be used cautiously due to potential side effects. Overuse of topical steroids can lead to nasal tissue thinning and other complications.
Recommended Approaches
1. Consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: Given the persistence of your symptoms and the lack of improvement with various medications, it would be wise to return to an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including nasal endoscopy, to visualize the nasal passages and sinuses directly. This will help determine if there is any structural issue or chronic infection that needs to be addressed.
2. Nasal Irrigation: Using saline nasal sprays or performing nasal irrigation with a neti pot can help clear mucus and allergens from your nasal passages. This method is generally safe and can provide immediate relief from congestion.
3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid potential irritants in your environment, such as smoke, strong perfumes, or cleaning products. Keeping your living space clean and using air purifiers can also help reduce exposure to allergens.
4. Medications: If allergies are suspected, antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may be prescribed. These can help reduce inflammation and mucus production. If a bacterial infection is suspected, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
5. Home Remedies: While some home remedies like steam inhalation or using a humidifier can provide temporary relief, be cautious with unverified treatments like using Tabasco sauce, as they may irritate your nasal passages further.
6. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they worsen and any potential triggers. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action.
Conclusion
It is essential to seek professional medical advice, especially since your symptoms have persisted despite various treatments. An ENT specialist can provide a comprehensive evaluation and tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs. In the meantime, consider incorporating saline nasal irrigation and avoiding known irritants to help manage your symptoms. Remember, self-treatment can sometimes lead to complications, so it's best to proceed under the guidance of a healthcare professional. I hope you find relief soon!
