Is it appropriate for pregnant women to walk up and down stairs?

Hello Doctor, I am the husband of a pregnant woman.
I would like to ask if it is appropriate for pregnant women to walk up and down stairs frequently, as we live on the fifth floor and usually have to do it all at once without resting.
This can lead to uterine contractions and severe pain.
I've heard that this can help with natural childbirth, but is that really the case, or does it increase the risk of preterm labor? We are considering moving to another place.
Additionally, the mother has a shorter cervical length, so we are concerned because she sometimes suddenly has difficulty breathing at night, and we are unsure of the cause.

Shuai Ge, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/08/08

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, pregnant women can still exercise as long as it is not intense.
If you are experiencing difficulty breathing, you may want to consult an ear, nose, and throat specialist to check for sleep apnea.
Wishing you good health.

Climbing stairs during pregnancy can be a topic of concern for many expectant mothers and their families. Generally speaking, moderate physical activity, including climbing stairs, is considered safe for most pregnant women, especially if there are no complications. However, there are several factors to consider when determining whether it is appropriate for a pregnant woman to frequently climb stairs.

Firstly, the stage of pregnancy plays a significant role. In the early stages of pregnancy, most women can engage in regular activities, including climbing stairs, without any issues. However, as pregnancy progresses, particularly in the third trimester, physical changes such as increased weight, altered center of gravity, and hormonal changes can affect balance and stability. This may make climbing stairs more challenging and potentially risky for falls.

Regarding the concern about uterine contractions and pain, it is essential to listen to the body. If climbing stairs leads to significant discomfort or cramping, it is advisable to reduce the frequency or intensity of this activity. Some women may experience Braxton Hicks contractions, which are practice contractions that can occur with physical activity, but if these contractions become painful or regular, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider.

The idea that climbing stairs can facilitate a smoother labor or lead to a more favorable position for delivery is a common belief. While staying active can help prepare the body for labor, it is not a guarantee for a quicker or easier delivery. Moreover, if there are concerns about cervical length or other complications, such as a short cervix, it is vital to follow the advice of a healthcare provider. In such cases, excessive physical activity, including climbing stairs, may need to be limited to prevent any risk of preterm labor.

In your situation, where there are concerns about the short cervical length and episodes of difficulty breathing at night, it is crucial to seek medical advice. These symptoms could indicate underlying issues that require attention. A healthcare provider can offer personalized recommendations based on the specific circumstances of the pregnancy.

If the current living situation poses challenges, such as frequent stair climbing, it may be worth considering a move to a more accessible location. This could alleviate some physical strain and provide a more comfortable environment for the expectant mother.

In summary, while climbing stairs can be safe for pregnant women, it is essential to consider individual circumstances, including the stage of pregnancy, physical comfort, and any medical concerns. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and recommendations tailored to the specific needs of the pregnant woman. Regular check-ups and open communication with healthcare professionals can help ensure a healthy pregnancy and address any concerns that may arise.
