A small bump has appeared on the skin of the penis?
Hello Dr.
Wu, I have had atopic dermatitis since childhood, and I often scratch my body due to itching.
I have had multiple infections leading to warts when I was younger, and some of them have not healed to this day.
Sometimes, when my skin condition worsens, even areas like the penis can become itchy and I end up scratching them until the skin breaks.
Recently, I noticed a skin-colored, slightly reddish bump near the base of my penis.
I would like to know, based on the appearance in the photo, what type of wart it might be.
Is it molluscum contagiosum? Thank you for your assistance in clarifying this.

When it comes to skin issues, particularly concerning bumps or lesions on the penis, it’s essential to consider various potential causes, including molluscum contagiosum. This viral infection is characterized by small, raised, flesh-colored bumps that can appear anywhere on the body, including the genital area. Molluscum contagiosum is contagious and can be transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact, which is particularly relevant in sexually active individuals.
Given your history of atopic dermatitis (eczema) and recurrent skin infections, it’s plausible that your skin may be more susceptible to various dermatological conditions, including molluscum contagiosum. The fact that you have had multiple infections in the past could indicate a compromised skin barrier, which is a common issue in individuals with eczema. This can lead to increased vulnerability to viral infections, such as molluscum contagiosum, especially when the skin is scratched or broken.
The appearance of a red, flesh-colored bump at the base of the penis could be consistent with molluscum contagiosum, but it’s important to note that other conditions could present similarly. For instance, genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) can also appear as bumps in the genital area. Additionally, folliculitis, which is an inflammation of the hair follicles, can cause red bumps and may be exacerbated by scratching or irritation.
To accurately diagnose the condition, a thorough examination by a healthcare professional is crucial. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, a biopsy of the lesion to determine its nature. Self-diagnosis based on images or descriptions can often lead to misunderstandings, as many skin conditions can appear similar.
In terms of treatment, if the bump is indeed molluscum contagiosum, it often resolves on its own over time, but treatment options are available if the lesions are bothersome or persistent. These treatments can include cryotherapy (freezing the lesions), curettage (surgical removal), or topical treatments that can help eliminate the bumps. If the lesions are caused by HPV, treatments may vary and can include topical medications or procedures to remove the warts.
Moreover, maintaining good skin hygiene and avoiding scratching can help prevent further irritation and potential secondary infections. Since you have a history of atopic dermatitis, it’s also advisable to continue using moisturizers to maintain skin hydration and integrity, which can help reduce the frequency of flare-ups.
In conclusion, while molluscum contagiosum is a possibility given your symptoms, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation, considering your history of skin conditions and any other relevant factors. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so seeking medical advice sooner rather than later is always a wise choice.
