Can a 13-year-old develop a Bartholin's gland cyst?
Hello, doctor.
I have a swelling near my labia.
A few days ago, it didn't hurt, so I didn't pay much attention to it.
However, it started to hurt after two days, and now it hurts when I sit or stand.
It seems like the skin might be slightly broken.
I searched online and think it might be a Bartholin's gland cyst.
Due to my age and other factors, I haven't felt comfortable discussing this with my family or friends.
I'm wondering if this will go away on its own or if I can manually drain it myself?

There are several causes of Bartholin's gland cysts, such as non-breathable clothing materials, improper hygiene, or bacterial infections.
It is advisable to seek medical evaluation as soon as possible.
Thank you.

More Info
Yes, a 13-year-old can develop a Bartholin gland cyst. The Bartholin glands, located at the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions of the vaginal opening, are responsible for secreting fluid that helps lubricate the vagina. These glands can become blocked due to various reasons, such as infection, inflammation, or trauma, leading to the formation of a cyst.
In your case, the swelling and pain you are experiencing could indeed be indicative of a Bartholin gland cyst. While these cysts can sometimes resolve on their own, especially if they are small and not infected, it is important to monitor the symptoms closely. If the cyst becomes infected, it may lead to a condition known as a Bartholin gland abscess, which can cause increased pain, redness, and swelling.
Self-treatment, such as attempting to squeeze or pop the cyst, is not advisable. This can lead to further irritation, infection, or complications. Instead, it is recommended to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a proper examination and may recommend treatments such as warm compresses to relieve discomfort, drainage of the cyst if it is large or infected, or even surgical options in recurrent cases.
It is understandable to feel hesitant about discussing these symptoms due to age or embarrassment, but it is crucial to prioritize your health. Healthcare professionals are trained to handle such issues sensitively and confidentially.
In summary, while a Bartholin gland cyst can occur in a 13-year-old, it is essential to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure that any underlying issues are addressed appropriately. Remember, your health is important, and discussing these concerns with a trusted adult or healthcare provider is a positive step towards feeling better.
