There is a small lump in the anal area?

Hello Doctor, recently while showering, I suddenly felt a lump at the anal area, which seems to be stuck at the anal opening.
It hasn't gone back in after a few days.
I suspect it might be a thrombosed hemorrhoid, but it doesn't hurt.
Occasionally, when I have hard stools, there is a little bit of blood, but otherwise, it doesn't cause much trouble.
Here is the photo: https://i.imgur.com/hnb7RpF.jpg.
Will leaving it untreated cause it to worsen, or would surgery be a better option? Could it actually be a polyp or colorectal cancer? QAQ

Dr. Zhang Shuhao reply Surgery

Based on the description, it appears to be a thrombosed hemorrhoid, which occurs when subcutaneous blood vessels are compressed, leading to bleeding and the formation of a blood clot.
It is advisable to take warm sitz baths, increase fluid intake, and consume dietary fiber to prevent constipation, allowing it to resolve on its own.
If it causes pain and disrupts daily life, a consultation for examination and possible removal may be necessary.

When you discover a small lump near the anus, it can understandably cause concern. The lump you described could be a variety of things, and it's important to consider several possibilities. Based on your description, it sounds like it could potentially be a hemorrhoid, particularly if you have experienced hard stools and some bleeding. Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the rectal area that can become engorged and protrude, leading to the formation of a lump. They can be internal or external, with external hemorrhoids often being more noticeable and sometimes causing discomfort or itching.

However, there are other conditions that could present similarly. For instance, anal warts, which are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), can appear as small lumps. Additionally, skin tags, which are benign growths, can also occur in the anal region. In some cases, a lump could indicate a more serious condition, such as an anal abscess or even anal cancer, although these are less common.

Given that you mentioned the lump does not hurt and only bleeds occasionally when you have hard stools, it might lean more towards a hemorrhoid or a benign condition. However, the presence of blood during bowel movements is a symptom that should not be ignored. Even if the lump does not cause pain, any rectal bleeding warrants a medical evaluation to rule out more serious conditions.

As for whether the lump will worsen over time, it is difficult to predict without a proper examination. Hemorrhoids can sometimes resolve on their own, especially with lifestyle changes such as increasing fiber intake, staying hydrated, and avoiding straining during bowel movements. However, if left untreated, they can become more problematic, leading to increased discomfort, pain, or complications such as thrombosis (a clot forming in the hemorrhoid).

Surgical intervention is typically reserved for severe cases or when conservative treatments fail. If the lump is indeed a hemorrhoid, treatments can include over-the-counter topical treatments, dietary changes, and in some cases, procedures like rubber band ligation or sclerotherapy. If the lump is something else, such as a skin tag or a wart, different treatment options may be appropriate.

It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. A doctor can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests, such as a colonoscopy, especially if there are concerning symptoms like persistent bleeding, changes in bowel habits, or if the lump changes in size or appearance.

In summary, while your lump may be a hemorrhoid, it is essential to seek medical advice to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and provide peace of mind. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
