Oral contraceptives
Hello, Doctor! I started taking a 28-day oral contraceptive pill from December of last year until July of this year.
My period started on July 30 and lasted until August 3.
I began a new pack of oral contraceptives on July 30 and took them for 7 days, but then I forgot to take them for about 3-4 consecutive days, so I stopped taking the pills for that month.
Finally, my period came again on August 11.
The time between the two cycles is quite short.
I would like to ask the doctor if this cycle is normal.
Could stopping the medication cause the endometrium to shed, leading to menstruation?
Ting, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/08/12
Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the onset of menstruation is due to not taking the medication.
Normally, oral contraceptives should be started on the fifth day of menstruation, so you should begin taking them on August 15.
Wishing you good health.

When a woman stops taking birth control pills, it is common to experience irregular periods as the body readjusts to its natural hormonal cycle. Birth control pills work by providing synthetic hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, suppress ovulation, and stabilize the uterine lining. When these pills are discontinued, the body may take some time to return to its pre-contraceptive state, which can lead to variations in menstrual cycles.
In your case, you began taking the birth control pills in December and continued until July, after which you experienced a menstrual period from July 30 to August 3. You then started a new pack of pills but missed several doses, leading to a subsequent period starting on August 11. This situation can be attributed to a few factors:
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: After stopping the pills, your body may experience fluctuations in hormone levels as it tries to establish a new balance. This can lead to shorter cycles, irregular bleeding, or spotting.
2. Withdrawal Bleeding: The first period after stopping the pill is often referred to as withdrawal bleeding, which occurs due to the sudden drop in hormones. If you started a new pack and then missed doses, your body might have reacted by shedding the uterine lining prematurely, resulting in a second period shortly after the first.
3. Cycle Variability: It is not uncommon for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle for several months after stopping hormonal contraceptives. Some may have shorter cycles, while others may experience longer cycles or missed periods altogether.
4. Impact of Missed Pills: Missing several doses of the birth control pills can disrupt the hormonal balance and lead to unexpected bleeding. It is essential to take the pills consistently to maintain their effectiveness and regulate your cycle.
In general, it can take a few months for your menstrual cycle to normalize after stopping birth control pills. If you continue to experience irregular periods, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can evaluate your situation, rule out any underlying conditions, and provide guidance on managing your menstrual health.
Additionally, if you are considering future contraceptive options or are planning to conceive, discussing your menstrual cycle and any concerns with a healthcare professional can help you make informed decisions. They may suggest tracking your cycles, lifestyle modifications, or alternative contraceptive methods that align with your health goals.
In summary, experiencing irregular periods after stopping birth control pills is quite common and can be influenced by hormonal adjustments and missed doses. If you have ongoing concerns or if your cycles do not stabilize over the next few months, seeking medical advice is recommended to ensure your reproductive health is on track.
