The tooth feels tight and strange after root canal filling, but there is no pain when eating?
Hello Doctor, I had root canal treatment on my upper left molar, and after the filling, I am experiencing very mild pain.
It feels uncomfortable when my tongue touches it.
It has been about three weeks since the treatment was completed.
I also feel slight tingling on the left side of my face down to my chin, but it's very mild.
The previous doctor mentioned that I should return only if the pain becomes severe.
Is this normal? This tooth has undergone multiple root canal treatments, and I'm unsure if I should go back for a check-up or consult another doctor.
I appreciate your time in addressing my concerns.
Thank you.

Hello Mr.
Xiao Zhang: If root canal treatment has been completed and there is still a slight tingling sensation, it is acceptable to monitor the situation after the treatment.
However, if the discomfort persists for one to two weeks, it is advisable to return for a follow-up examination.

After undergoing a root canal treatment, it is not uncommon to experience mild discomfort or sensitivity in the treated area. This can be attributed to several factors related to the procedure itself and the healing process that follows.
Firstly, root canal treatment involves the removal of infected or damaged pulp tissue from inside the tooth. After this tissue is removed, the tooth is cleaned, shaped, and then sealed. The process can cause some trauma to the surrounding tissues, leading to inflammation and discomfort. It is important to note that the discomfort you are experiencing, especially if it is mild, is generally considered a normal part of the healing process.
Typically, patients may experience sensitivity to pressure, temperature, or even when touching the area with their tongue. This sensitivity can last for a few days to a few weeks after the procedure. However, if the discomfort persists beyond a few weeks or worsens, it may indicate a complication, such as an infection or an incomplete sealing of the root canal.
The tingling or mild numbness you mentioned in your left cheek and jaw could be related to the anesthesia used during the procedure or could be due to inflammation affecting nearby nerves. This sensation should gradually resolve as the inflammation decreases and healing progresses.
It is also worth noting that if you have a history of repeated root canal treatments on the same tooth, there may be additional factors at play. Repeated procedures can sometimes lead to more complex issues, including the possibility of a persistent infection or the need for additional treatments, such as an apicoectomy (surgical removal of the tip of the root) or even extraction if the tooth cannot be saved.
In your case, since it has been three weeks since the treatment and you are still experiencing discomfort, it would be prudent to follow up with your dentist. They can conduct a thorough examination, possibly including X-rays, to assess the healing process and determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.
If your current dentist is unable to provide satisfactory answers or if you feel uncomfortable with the treatment plan, seeking a second opinion from another dental professional, particularly an endodontist (a specialist in root canal treatments), may be beneficial. They can offer insights into whether your symptoms are within the normal range or if further intervention is necessary.
In summary, mild discomfort after a root canal treatment can be normal, but persistent or worsening symptoms warrant further evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution and consult with your dentist to ensure that your healing process is on track and to address any potential complications early on.
