Pregnancy test questions?
Hello doctor, my last menstruation was from July 20 to July 24.
I had unprotected external ejaculation on August 2.
I took a pregnancy test 16 days after intercourse (not using first morning urine) and it was negative.
Recently, I have been experiencing symptoms such as breast fullness and occasional uterine discomfort.
I would like to know if I could be pregnant, and when should I take another test?
Yy, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/08/18
Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, a negative pregnancy test 12 days after sexual intercourse indicates that you are likely not pregnant.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding pregnancy testing and the symptoms that may indicate pregnancy, it's essential to consider both the timing of the test and the nature of the symptoms experienced. Based on your situation, where your last menstrual period was from July 20 to July 24, and you had unprotected intercourse on August 2, you are currently 16 days post-ovulation (assuming ovulation occurred around mid-cycle).
Typically, the best time to take a home pregnancy test is after a missed period, which is usually about two weeks after ovulation. Since your menstrual cycle is around 28-35 days, if you have not had your period by now, it would be advisable to take another pregnancy test. However, since you mentioned that you tested negative 16 days after intercourse, it is possible that the test was taken too early, especially if your cycle is longer than average.
Home pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. The levels of hCG increase rapidly in early pregnancy, but it may take time to reach a detectable level, especially if you test too early. If you tested negative and are still experiencing symptoms such as breast tenderness (which you referred to as "涨奶") and occasional uterine discomfort, it might be worth waiting a few more days and testing again, preferably with first-morning urine, which is more concentrated and can provide a more accurate result.
In addition to the timing of the test, it’s also important to consider the symptoms you are experiencing. Breast tenderness can be a sign of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or early pregnancy, as hormonal changes can cause similar symptoms. Uterine discomfort can also be attributed to various factors, including ovulation, PMS, or early pregnancy. However, these symptoms alone are not definitive indicators of pregnancy.
If you continue to experience symptoms and your period does not arrive, I recommend testing again in a few days. If you receive another negative result and still have not menstruated, it may be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test, which is more sensitive than a urine test and can detect lower levels of hCG. Additionally, they can help rule out other potential causes for your symptoms, such as hormonal imbalances or other medical conditions.
In summary, the best approach is to wait a few more days and retest, ideally using first-morning urine for the most accurate result. If you remain uncertain or continue to experience symptoms without a clear explanation, seeking medical advice is a wise decision. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide the necessary support and guidance during this time.
