Frequent urination issues?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask a question.
I went for a follow-up appointment for urticaria this morning, and the doctor prescribed some antihistamines.
After taking a dose this morning, I have been feeling the urge to urinate frequently, which I did not experience before taking the medication.
Is this considered a side effect of the medication? The medications prescribed by the doctor are as follows: Alledine 602, Famotidine 203, Butenafine 104, Levocetirizine 5, and Desloratadine.
Thank you.

I am not a prescribing physician, so I am unable to provide an answer.
I recommend discussing this with the original prescribing physician or the pharmacist who dispensed your medication.

Frequent urination can indeed be a concerning symptom, especially when it appears after starting a new medication. In your case, you mentioned that you began taking antihistamines, specifically Levocetirizine and Desloratadine, after a visit to the doctor for urticaria (hives). While these medications are primarily used to alleviate allergy symptoms, they can have various side effects.
Antihistamines, particularly the first-generation types, are known for causing sedation and other central nervous system effects. However, Levocetirizine and Desloratadine are second-generation antihistamines, which are generally less sedating and have a more favorable side effect profile. That said, they can still cause some unexpected reactions in certain individuals.
Frequent urination is not a commonly reported side effect of antihistamines. However, it is important to consider a few factors that might contribute to this symptom:
1. Fluid Intake: If you increased your fluid intake, either consciously or unconsciously, this could lead to more frequent urination. Sometimes, when people start taking medications, they may also increase their water consumption, thinking it will help with hydration or medication efficacy.
2. Medication Interactions: If you are taking other medications alongside antihistamines, there could be interactions that lead to increased urination. For example, certain diuretics or medications that affect kidney function can cause increased urination.
3. Underlying Conditions: It’s also worth considering if there are any underlying medical conditions that could be contributing to your symptoms. Conditions such as diabetes or urinary tract infections can lead to increased urination and may coincide with the timing of starting a new medication.
4. Psychological Factors: Sometimes, the awareness of taking a new medication can lead to heightened attention to bodily sensations, which might make you more aware of needing to urinate.
If you find that the frequent urination persists or worsens, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate your overall health, review all medications you are taking, and possibly perform tests to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while frequent urination is not a typical side effect of the antihistamines you mentioned, individual responses to medications can vary. Monitoring your symptoms and discussing them with your healthcare provider will help ensure that you receive appropriate care and guidance.
