Pregnancy test questions?
My period was supposed to arrive on August 20, but it hasn't.
I had sexual intercourse 16 days ago, and a morning urine pregnancy test was negative.
Today, 18 days after intercourse, I took another morning urine test, and it was also negative.
Can I rule out pregnancy with these results? If I need to test again, when would be the best time? Thank you, doctor.

Hello, a negative pregnancy test 12 days after sexual intercourse should indicate that you are not pregnant.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding pregnancy tests and determining the right time to take them, it's essential to consider several factors, including the timing of your menstrual cycle, the nature of your sexual activity, and the sensitivity of the pregnancy test you are using.
Based on your situation, you mentioned that your expected period was on August 20, but it has not arrived, and you have taken two pregnancy tests: one 16 days after sexual intercourse and another 18 days after, both of which returned negative results. Given this context, let's break down the implications of these results.
1. Timing of the Test: Pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. The hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy, typically becomes detectable in urine about 14 days after conception. Since you had sexual intercourse and are now 18 days post-intercourse without a positive test, it is reasonable to suspect that you may not be pregnant. However, if you ovulated later than expected, it could take longer for hCG levels to rise sufficiently for detection.
2. Understanding Test Results: A negative result at this stage, especially if you are using a sensitive home pregnancy test, generally indicates that you are not pregnant. However, if your menstrual cycle is irregular or if you have conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), it may affect the timing of ovulation and menstruation, leading to a delayed period without pregnancy.
3. When to Retest: If your period does not arrive within a week of your expected date, it is advisable to retest. This allows for any potential late ovulation to be accounted for. Additionally, if you experience any unusual symptoms, such as persistent nausea, breast tenderness, or fatigue, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
4. Factors Affecting Results: Certain factors can influence the accuracy of pregnancy tests, including:
- Dilution of Urine: Testing with diluted urine (for example, after drinking a lot of fluids) can lead to a false negative. Morning urine is typically more concentrated and is recommended for testing.
- Test Sensitivity: Different brands of pregnancy tests have varying sensitivities to hCG. Some can detect lower levels of the hormone than others, so it's essential to check the packaging for this information.
5. Other Considerations: If you continue to experience irregularities in your menstrual cycle or if you have concerns about your reproductive health, it is advisable to seek medical advice. Conditions like hormonal imbalances or ovarian cysts can cause missed periods and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
In summary, based on the information provided, it is likely that you are not pregnant given the negative tests taken 16 and 18 days after intercourse. However, if your period does not arrive soon, consider retesting or consulting with a healthcare provider for further assessment. Understanding your body and menstrual cycle is crucial, and any persistent changes should be addressed with a medical professional.
