Peeling of the glans penis?
Recently, I pulled back my foreskin and noticed that the glans is covered with white, thread-like substances.
When I rub it a bit, it comes off in large patches.
I wash my glans every day while showering.
Could this be a sensitivity to soap? What is it? It seems to be attached to the glans; is it shed skin? If it is skin, what can I do about it?

Upon retracting the foreskin, you noticed a white, thread-like substance.
It's unclear if you have encountered this before.
What you are describing seems to be typical smegma.
You will gradually get used to pulling it back for cleaning (be gentle!).
However, if you have had similar experiences in the past but this time the "white threads" appear significantly different, it would be advisable to have it examined by a dermatologist.

More Info
The presence of white, stringy substances on the glans (head of the penis) can be concerning, but it is often related to normal physiological processes or benign conditions. Here are some potential causes and solutions for this issue.
Possible Causes
1. Smegma: This is a natural substance that consists of dead skin cells, oils, and other bodily secretions. It can accumulate under the foreskin in uncircumcised males. Smegma is typically white or yellowish and can appear stringy. Regular washing can help prevent its buildup.
2. Fungal Infections: Conditions such as candidiasis (yeast infection) can lead to white discharge or patches on the glans. This is often accompanied by itching, irritation, or a burning sensation. If you notice these symptoms, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider.
3. Balanitis: This is inflammation of the glans, which can be caused by poor hygiene, irritants (like soaps or lotions), or infections. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and discharge. If you suspect balanitis, it is advisable to see a doctor for appropriate treatment.
4. Contact Dermatitis: If you are using a new soap or personal care product, it could cause an allergic reaction, leading to irritation and the shedding of skin. If you suspect this, try switching to a mild, fragrance-free soap and see if the symptoms improve.
5. Psoriasis or Other Skin Conditions: Skin disorders can also affect the genital area, leading to flaking or shedding of skin. If you have a history of skin conditions, this could be a possibility.
Solutions and Recommendations
- Hygiene: Continue to maintain good hygiene by gently washing the area with warm water and a mild soap. Avoid harsh soaps or products that may irritate the skin.
- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that soap or other products are causing irritation, discontinue their use and opt for hypoallergenic alternatives.
- Moisturizing: If the skin appears dry or flaky, consider using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to help soothe the area.
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the white substance persists, increases in quantity, or is accompanied by other symptoms (such as pain, itching, or unusual discharge), it is important to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to determine the underlying cause.
- Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it can be tempting to self-diagnose based on online information, it is crucial to seek professional medical advice for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
In summary, while the presence of white, stringy substances on the penis can be alarming, it is often related to benign conditions such as smegma or mild irritations. Maintaining good hygiene and avoiding irritants are key steps in managing this issue. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is essential to rule out any underlying conditions and receive appropriate treatment.
