Post-Surgery Discharge and Urination Issues After Urethral Surgery - Urology

There is discharge from the urethral opening?

Hello, doctor.
A few days ago, I underwent a circumcision procedure.
After the surgery, I noticed yellow discharge from the urethral opening.
The doctor told me this is normal and will resolve on its own.
However, when I urinate, not only does the urine split, but it also feels like there is a blockage, making it difficult to urinate.
Is this normal? (It's been 7 days post-surgery.) Additionally, if the wound near the frenulum gets pulled open and requires re-stitching, is that considered a serious situation? How long does the recovery period typically take? Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: Is there discharge from the wound or the urethral opening? If it's from the urethra, a urine test is needed, and it's advisable to drink plenty of water.
It's common for urine to split.
Additionally, I would like to ask if a wound near the frenulum being stretched open would require re-suturing, is that considered a very serious situation? --> No.
How long does the recovery period typically take? --> 1-2 weeks.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing a circumcision surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some unusual symptoms during the recovery phase. The presence of yellow discharge from the urethral opening is generally considered normal, as it may be a sign of healing tissue and the body's natural response to surgery. However, the sensation of urine splitting or feeling obstructed while urinating can be concerning and may indicate a few potential issues that should be addressed.

Firstly, the splitting of urine can occur due to swelling or irritation around the surgical site, which can temporarily affect the flow of urine. This is particularly common in the days following surgery as the tissues are healing. If the sensation of obstruction persists, it could be due to residual swelling, the formation of scar tissue, or even a potential narrowing of the urethra (stricture). It is essential to monitor these symptoms closely and report any significant changes or worsening conditions to your healthcare provider.

Regarding the concern about the stitches or the area around the frenulum (the band of tissue connecting the underside of the penis to the glans) being pulled apart, it is crucial to follow your doctor's post-operative care instructions carefully. If the stitches do come apart, it may not necessarily be a severe issue, but it does warrant a follow-up with your surgeon. They will assess the situation to determine if re-suturing is necessary. The severity of the situation often depends on the extent of the separation and whether it affects the healing process.

In terms of recovery time, it can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, the initial healing phase after circumcision can take about 1 to 2 weeks, but complete healing may take longer, especially if any complications arise. During this time, it is essential to maintain proper hygiene, avoid any activities that could strain the surgical site, and follow any specific instructions provided by your surgeon.

If you experience increased pain, persistent bleeding, or signs of infection (such as fever, increased redness, or discharge that changes in color or odor), it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of complications that require immediate intervention.

In summary, while some discomfort and unusual symptoms can be expected after circumcision surgery, it is vital to remain vigilant and communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns. They are best equipped to evaluate your condition and provide guidance on managing your recovery effectively. Always prioritize your health and well-being by seeking professional advice when in doubt.
