Can You Get Pregnant from Withdrawal Method on First Day of Period? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

I would like to inquire whether ejaculation outside during the first day of menstruation can lead to pregnancy?

Hello, my menstrual cycle is about 26-28 days.
My last periods were on July 23 and August 18.
On August 18 (the first day of my period), I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend without a condom, but he withdrew before ejaculation.
Is it possible that I could become pregnant from this? Thank you.
(I have downloaded a period tracking app, and my periods are usually regular.)

Hello, it should be safe during this period and you are unlikely to get pregnant.
Wishing you good health.

The question of whether you can get pregnant from the withdrawal method (also known as "pulling out") on the first day of your period is a nuanced one. While the withdrawal method is often used as a form of contraception, it is not considered highly reliable.
To address your specific situation, let's first clarify a few key points about the menstrual cycle and ovulation. The average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can range from 21 to 35 days in healthy women. Ovulation typically occurs around 14 days before the start of your next period. For someone with a 26-28 day cycle, ovulation would likely occur between days 12 and 14 of the cycle.
If your last period started on July 23, and you had unprotected intercourse on August 18, which is the first day of your next period, it is unlikely that you would conceive from that encounter. This is because ovulation would have already occurred approximately two weeks prior, and the egg would only be viable for about 12-24 hours after ovulation. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, but since you were on your period, the chances of sperm meeting a viable egg are very low.

However, it is important to note that menstrual cycles can vary, and sometimes ovulation can occur earlier or later than expected. Additionally, if you have irregular cycles, predicting ovulation can be more challenging. The withdrawal method also has its risks; pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, and if not done perfectly, the withdrawal method can lead to unintended pregnancies.

In summary, while the likelihood of getting pregnant from the withdrawal method on the first day of your period is low, it is not impossible, especially if your cycle is irregular or if ovulation occurs earlier than expected. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late or consult with a healthcare provider for further guidance.

In terms of contraception, if you are looking for more reliable methods, consider options such as hormonal birth control, condoms, or other barrier methods. These can significantly reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy compared to the withdrawal method. Always consult with a healthcare professional to find the best contraceptive method that suits your needs and lifestyle.
