Post-SMILE laser procedure sensation of moisture or fog?
Hello, doctor.
I underwent SMILE Pro surgery in mid-April, and my vision check showed 1.2 in both eyes.
About two months later, the foggy vision has mostly disappeared.
However, since I have been taking Aletheia, I often experience foggy vision again after taking it, which can last for several hours.
I am concerned whether this could cause any permanent effects in the long term.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Hello: Aripiprazole may cause some side effects related to the eyes, including dry eye symptoms and blurred vision.
This could be one of the reasons for the sensation of fogginess you experience while taking aripiprazole.
However, whether this symptom is considered normal requires a more specific evaluation.
If this symptom persists, especially with long-term use of aripiprazole, it is advisable to consult with your ophthalmologist and psychiatrist.

After undergoing SMILE laser surgery, experiencing foggy vision or a "hazy" sensation can be a common occurrence during the recovery phase. It is important to understand that the healing process for the eyes can vary significantly from person to person, and several factors can contribute to visual disturbances post-surgery.
In your case, you mentioned that your vision reached 1.2 shortly after the surgery, which indicates a successful initial outcome. However, the subsequent development of a foggy sensation, particularly after taking medications like Alethecan (assuming this is the medication you referred to), raises some important considerations.
Firstly, the foggy vision you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors:
1. Corneal Healing: After SMILE surgery, the cornea undergoes a healing process. This can involve temporary swelling or changes in the corneal surface, which may lead to visual disturbances such as fogginess or haziness. Typically, these symptoms improve as the cornea heals and stabilizes over time.
2. Dry Eyes: Post-operative dry eye syndrome is a common side effect of laser eye surgeries, including SMILE. Insufficient tear production can lead to blurred or foggy vision, especially when focusing on screens or reading for extended periods. If you are experiencing dry eyes, using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops as recommended by your eye care provider can help alleviate these symptoms.
3. Medication Side Effects: If the medication you are taking has side effects that impact your vision, it could contribute to the foggy sensation. Some medications can cause dryness or changes in vision, so it is essential to discuss any concerns with your prescribing physician.
4. Visual Fluctuations: It is not uncommon for patients to experience fluctuations in vision during the recovery period. This can be influenced by factors such as lighting conditions, fatigue, and even hormonal changes.
Regarding your concern about whether these symptoms could lead to permanent effects, it is generally unlikely that temporary foggy vision will result in long-term complications if the underlying causes are addressed. However, if the foggy sensation persists or worsens, it is crucial to follow up with your eye care provider. They can conduct a thorough examination to rule out any complications and provide tailored advice based on your specific situation.
In summary, while experiencing foggy vision after SMILE surgery can be concerning, it is often a normal part of the healing process. Monitoring your symptoms, managing dry eye issues, and maintaining open communication with your eye care provider are key steps in ensuring a smooth recovery. If you have any ongoing concerns or if the foggy vision significantly impacts your daily life, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation and guidance from your eye doctor. Your vision health is paramount, and timely intervention can help ensure the best possible outcome.
