Pus formation after wisdom tooth extraction?

Hello doctor, two weeks after having my wisdom teeth removed, I returned to the clinic to have my stitches taken out and to get braces.
The next day, there was pus at the wound site, and I could squeeze out yellow fluid.
What should I do?

Hello: It is recommended to return to the original clinic as soon as possible for the physician to check for any bacterial infection or purulent condition.

After a wisdom tooth extraction, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some complications, including infections. The presence of pus, especially if it is yellow, indicates that there may be an infection at the extraction site. Here’s how to manage this situation effectively:
1. Consult Your Dentist or Oral Surgeon: The first step is to contact the dental professional who performed the extraction or your general dentist. They can assess the situation and determine the severity of the infection. It’s essential to get a professional evaluation, as they may need to drain the infection or prescribe antibiotics.

2. Antibiotic Treatment: If an infection is confirmed, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help clear the infection. It’s crucial to take the full course of antibiotics as directed, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication. This helps prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. However, always follow the dosage instructions and consult your dentist if you have any concerns about medication interactions or side effects.

4. Oral Hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is vital, especially after a tooth extraction. Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day, particularly after meals, to help keep the area clean. Avoid vigorous rinsing, as this can dislodge the blood clot and worsen the situation.

5. Dietary Adjustments: Stick to a soft diet to avoid irritating the extraction site. Foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies can be good options. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that could cause discomfort or further injury to the area.

6. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking can impede healing and increase the risk of complications, including infections. Alcohol can also interfere with the healing process and interact negatively with antibiotics. It’s best to avoid both until the infection is resolved and the area has healed.

7. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If you notice increased swelling, persistent pain, fever, or if the pus continues to drain, seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more severe infection that requires prompt treatment.

8. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all follow-up appointments with your dentist. They will monitor your healing progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.

In summary, managing a post-wisdom tooth extraction infection involves consulting your dentist, possibly taking antibiotics, maintaining good oral hygiene, adjusting your diet, and monitoring your symptoms closely. Prompt action can help prevent further complications and ensure a smoother recovery. Always prioritize communication with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment.
