Hematuria after masturbation?
On July 29, I experienced hematuria (without any discomfort), approximately three episodes, which gradually became lighter.
On August 8, I went to the hospital for an examination, and the doctor arranged for renal imaging and bladder ultrasound, both of which were normal, and no medications were prescribed.
On August 15, I experienced hematuria again, and it seems to occur after masturbation (approximately three to four episodes each time).
I then stopped masturbating for about two weeks.
However, a few days ago, after masturbating, hematuria reappeared.
I would like to ask the doctor how long I should refrain from masturbation, whether I should undergo any further tests, or what might be causing this.
I have no other physical discomfort symptoms.
Thank you, Dr.
Du, for your attention.

Blood in urine, or hematuria, can be a concerning symptom, especially when it occurs after specific activities like masturbation. In your case, it seems that you have experienced intermittent episodes of blood in your urine, particularly following masturbation, without any accompanying discomfort or other symptoms. This can be perplexing, and it’s important to approach this situation with careful consideration.
Firstly, it’s essential to understand that hematuria can arise from various causes, including urinary tract infections, kidney stones, trauma, or even benign conditions. Given that you have undergone imaging studies such as kidney scans and bladder ultrasounds, which returned normal results, it is reassuring that there are no obvious structural abnormalities or acute issues in your urinary system.
The fact that you notice blood in your urine specifically after masturbation raises the possibility of a few potential causes:
1. Trauma or Irritation: Masturbation can sometimes lead to minor trauma or irritation of the urethra or surrounding tissues, especially if there is vigorous activity involved. This irritation can result in small amounts of bleeding, which may manifest as blood in the urine.
2. Prostate Issues: In males, the prostate gland can sometimes contribute to hematuria. Conditions such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) can lead to bleeding, particularly during activities that increase pelvic pressure.
3. Vascular Issues: The act of masturbation can increase blood flow and pressure in the pelvic region, which might exacerbate any underlying vascular issues, leading to bleeding.
4. Psychogenic Factors: Stress or anxiety related to sexual activity can sometimes manifest physically, potentially leading to symptoms like hematuria.
Given that you have already taken a break from masturbation for two weeks and still experienced blood in your urine, it may be prudent to consider further evaluation. Here are some steps you might take:
- Consult a Urologist: Since your primary care physician has already conducted initial tests, a referral to a urologist may be beneficial. They can perform a more detailed evaluation, including a cystoscopy, which allows direct visualization of the bladder and urethra.
- Keep a Symptom Diary: Documenting when the hematuria occurs, its severity, and any associated activities or symptoms can help your healthcare provider identify patterns and potential triggers.
- Consider Other Factors: Reflect on any other lifestyle factors that might contribute to this issue, such as hydration status, recent physical activities, or any medications or supplements you are taking.
- Avoid Irritation: In the meantime, you might consider abstaining from masturbation until you have a clearer understanding of the cause of your symptoms. If the hematuria persists despite abstaining, it would further indicate the need for a thorough investigation.
In conclusion, while the absence of discomfort is a positive sign, the recurrence of blood in your urine warrants further investigation to rule out any underlying conditions. Engaging with a specialist and following up with appropriate tests will be crucial in determining the cause and ensuring your health and well-being. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to symptoms like hematuria.
