Drug interactions
I have been taking Meirolyn F.C.
Tablets for a long time, and recently I have been using Cetirizine F.C.
Tablets 10mg "Sinphar," PEACE TABLETS "YUNG SHIN," and PILIAN TABLETS "Y.S." due to allergic rhinitis.
I would like to know if these medications will reduce the effectiveness of contraception.
Zhang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/09/21
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello,
The medications that may interact with oral contraceptives include:
1.
Antibiotics (Penicillin, Cephalosporins, Erythromycin, Sulfonamides, Bactrim, Chloramphenicol) - Doxycycline can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
When taking doxycycline, alternative contraceptive methods should be used, as it may decrease the gut flora that aids in absorption, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the contraceptive.
2.
Sedatives (Barbiturates) - These can increase the metabolism of oral contraceptives, reducing their effectiveness.
3.
Antiepileptic drugs (Primidone, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine) - These also increase the metabolism of oral contraceptives, leading to decreased effectiveness.
4.
Tuberculosis medications (Rifampicin, Isoniazid).
5.
Antidiabetic medications (Rosiglitazone).
6.
Acetaminophen and Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) - These may inhibit the metabolism of estrogen, potentially increasing its concentration in the body and leading to a higher incidence of side effects.
7.
Oral contraceptives can affect the action of anticoagulants.
8.
Smoking - This can increase the metabolism of oral contraceptives, reducing their effectiveness.
Therefore, if you need to take any of the aforementioned medications while on oral contraceptives, it is advisable to use additional contraceptive measures for at least seven days.
9.
Long-term consumption of tea or certain herbs may also have additive or subtractive effects with oral contraceptives.
Additionally, any medication should be taken with water and not with beverages like tea or coffee, as this may affect the medication's effectiveness.
The likelihood of interaction with the mentioned medications is relatively low.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info
When it comes to the interaction between allergy medications and birth control effectiveness, it is important to understand the pharmacological properties of the medications involved. In general, most allergy medications, particularly antihistamines like Cetirizine, do not have a significant impact on the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.
Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine that is commonly used to treat allergic reactions, such as hay fever and hives. It works by blocking histamine receptors, which helps alleviate symptoms like sneezing, itching, and runny nose. The mechanism of action of Cetirizine does not interfere with the hormonal pathways that are crucial for the effectiveness of birth control pills.
Similarly, the other medications you mentioned, such as PEACE TABLETS and PILIAN TABLETS, are typically herbal or alternative remedies. While the specific ingredients in these products can vary, most herbal supplements do not have a well-documented effect on hormonal contraceptives. However, it is essential to note that some herbal products can interact with medications, including hormonal contraceptives, but this is more common with certain herbs like St. John's Wort, which is known to induce liver enzymes that can decrease the effectiveness of birth control.
In your case, since you are taking Meirolyn F.C. Tablets, which is a hormonal contraceptive, along with Cetirizine and other allergy medications, you should not be overly concerned about a reduction in contraceptive effectiveness due to these allergy medications. The consensus among healthcare professionals is that antihistamines, including Cetirizine, do not compromise the efficacy of birth control pills.
However, it is always wise to consult with your healthcare provider regarding any concerns about medication interactions. If you are taking multiple medications, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements, your doctor can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and the specific formulations you are using.
In summary, based on current medical knowledge, allergy medications like Cetirizine do not affect the effectiveness of birth control pills such as Meirolyn F.C. Tablets. It is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking to ensure safe and effective management of both your allergies and contraceptive needs. If you experience any unusual symptoms or have further concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for guidance.
