Will there be any impact?

Hello, doctor.
I have been taking the oral contraceptive pill (Yue Ji).
I am about to start my fifth pack on September 25, but I recently had a health check-up due to changing jobs, and my liver enzyme levels were abnormal.
My family gave me a bottle of a Japanese health supplement, and I can't upload a photo here, but I'm unsure if it will affect the oral contraceptive pill! I can't pronounce the name on the bottle (in Japanese), but the main ingredients are: Vitamin C, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B1, Pantothenic acid, and Vitamin B12.
Other ingredients include: scallop shell powder, sugar, maltose, gum arabic, hydroxypropyl cellulose, gelatin, carboxymethyl cellulose calcium, calcium silicate, titanium dioxide, calcium stearate, talc, chamomile, palm wax, and food coloring Yellow No.
4.
I would like to ask the doctor if this will affect the oral contraceptive pill.
Thank you! 🙏

When it comes to the interaction between dietary supplements and birth control pills, it's essential to understand how various substances can affect the efficacy of contraceptives. In your case, you are taking a birth control pill (referred to as "悅己") and are considering the impact of a Japanese dietary supplement that contains several vitamins and other ingredients.

Generally, most vitamins and dietary supplements do not interfere with the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives like birth control pills. The primary concern with drug interactions typically revolves around certain medications, particularly some antibiotics and herbal supplements, which can affect how birth control pills work. For example, some antibiotics, such as rifampin, have been shown to reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives by affecting liver enzymes that metabolize these hormones. However, the majority of commonly prescribed antibiotics do not have this effect.

In your case, the dietary supplement you mentioned contains vitamins such as Vitamin C, B1, B2, B6, B12, and other non-active ingredients like shell powder, sugar, and various stabilizers. These components are generally considered safe and do not have known interactions with birth control pills. Vitamins are essential for overall health, and while they can support bodily functions, they do not typically interfere with hormonal contraceptives.

It's also worth noting that the liver plays a crucial role in metabolizing both medications and supplements. If you have abnormal liver function, as indicated by your recent health check, it's wise to consult with your healthcare provider about any supplements you are considering. Some supplements can affect liver enzymes, but the vitamins you mentioned are usually not harmful in this regard. However, individual responses can vary, and your healthcare provider can give you personalized advice based on your health status.

In summary, the vitamins and ingredients in the supplement you described are unlikely to affect the efficacy of your birth control pill. However, due to your liver concerns, it is always best to discuss any new supplements with your doctor to ensure they are safe for you to take. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific health needs and help you make informed decisions regarding your contraceptive methods and overall health.
In conclusion, while most dietary supplements, particularly those containing vitamins, do not interfere with birth control pills, individual health factors, such as liver function, should always be considered. Always consult with a healthcare professional when in doubt about potential interactions between supplements and medications.
