Brown discharge

Hello, doctor: I notice that I have some brown discharge almost every month before my period, and this month it is more pronounced and quite abundant.
I'm not sure what the reason is.
Is this normal? It doesn't have any odor.

Dr. Wang Jionglang reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: In response to your question, each month’s menstruation is essentially the shedding of the endometrial lining mixed with blood discharge.
Prior to menstruation, if there is some brown discharge, it is actually a small amount of menstrual blood that has shed early.
If the amount is significant, it may indicate hormonal imbalances in the body or adhesions in the uterine lining.
Additionally, some women who have an intrauterine device (IUD) may experience similar symptoms.
Please make an appointment to determine the underlying issue.

More Info

Brown discharge before menstruation is a common occurrence for many women and is typically considered normal. This discharge is often a result of old blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus, which can happen at the end of a menstrual cycle or just before a new cycle begins. The brown color indicates that the blood is older, as fresh blood is usually bright red.
In the menstrual cycle, the lining of the uterus thickens in preparation for a potential pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the body sheds this lining, leading to menstruation. Sometimes, this shedding process can begin a few days before the actual period, resulting in brown discharge. This can be especially noticeable if the discharge is mixed with cervical mucus, which can happen during ovulation or just before menstruation.

There are several reasons why you might experience brown discharge before your period:
1. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones can affect the timing and nature of your menstrual cycle, leading to brown discharge as your body prepares for menstruation.

2. Implantation Bleeding: If you are sexually active and there is a possibility of pregnancy, brown discharge could be a sign of implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This typically happens around a week after conception.

3. Uterine Fibroids or Polyps: These benign growths in the uterus can cause irregular bleeding or spotting, which may appear as brown discharge.

4. Endometriosis: This condition occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, leading to various symptoms, including brown discharge, especially before menstruation.

5. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): An infection of the reproductive organs can cause abnormal discharge, including brown spotting.

6. Birth Control Methods: Hormonal contraceptives can lead to changes in your menstrual cycle, including spotting or brown discharge.

If the brown discharge is accompanied by other symptoms such as a strong odor, itching, or unusual pain, it may be a sign of an infection or other medical condition that requires attention. In such cases, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

In summary, brown discharge before your period is generally normal and can be attributed to various factors, including hormonal changes and the natural shedding of the uterine lining. However, if you have concerns or experience any unusual symptoms, it is always best to seek medical advice to rule out any underlying issues. Regular gynecological check-ups can help monitor your reproductive health and address any concerns you may have.
