External anal swelling?

Hello doctor, I have a lump about one centimeter from my anus that is colorless and feels and looks similar to a mosquito bite.
About two weeks before the lump appeared, I experienced constipation and some bleeding from the anus, but the lump was not present at that time.
Could this be some type of cyst or abscess? Will it heal on its own? I don't want to undergo surgery.

Zhen, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/10/04

Understanding anal swellings can be a complex issue, as they can arise from various causes, each with its own set of symptoms and treatment options. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a condition that could be related to hemorrhoids, skin tags, or possibly an anal abscess.

Causes of Anal Swellings
1. Hemorrhoids: These are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus. They can be internal or external and may cause symptoms such as bleeding during bowel movements, discomfort, and swelling. The fact that you experienced bleeding during constipation suggests that hemorrhoids could be a possibility.

2. Skin Tags: These are benign growths that can occur around the anal area. They are usually painless and may appear as small, soft lumps. They can develop as a result of friction or irritation, especially if you have had issues with constipation.

3. Anal Abscess: This is a collection of pus that can occur due to an infection in the anal glands. Symptoms may include swelling, pain, and sometimes fever. An abscess typically requires medical intervention, often leading to drainage.

4. Fistula: This is an abnormal connection between the anal canal and the skin, often resulting from an abscess. It may cause persistent drainage and discomfort.

Symptoms to Monitor
- Pain: Is there any pain associated with the swelling? Pain can indicate an abscess or thrombosed hemorrhoid.

- Bleeding: Any further bleeding during bowel movements should be noted, as this can indicate more serious conditions.

- Changes in bowel habits: Persistent constipation or changes in stool consistency can exacerbate anal conditions.

- Fever or systemic symptoms: If you develop a fever, this may indicate an infection that requires immediate medical attention.

Treatment Options
1. Conservative Management: If the swelling is due to hemorrhoids or skin tags, conservative measures may be effective. These include:
- Dietary changes: Increasing fiber intake can help prevent constipation and reduce straining during bowel movements.

- Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids can help soften stool.

- Topical treatments: Over-the-counter creams or ointments can provide relief from discomfort and itching.

2. Sitz Baths: Soaking in warm water several times a day can help alleviate pain and promote healing.

3. Medical Evaluation: Given your symptoms, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies if necessary.
4. Surgical Options: If the swelling is due to a more serious condition like an abscess or if conservative measures fail, surgical intervention may be required. However, many conditions can be managed without surgery, especially if caught early.

Conclusion
While some anal swellings may resolve on their own, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the swelling persists, worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as increased pain or fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can offer a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific condition. Remember, early intervention can prevent complications and improve your quality of life.
