Removal of the intrauterine device (IUD)

At the beginning of the month, I noticed blood when I went to the bathroom, so I immediately inserted a contraceptive ring at home.
However, there was no blood on my hands during insertion, and I realized it wasn't my period.
I left the ring inside for about 10-20 minutes before removing it, cleaned it, and stored it in the refrigerator for a day and a half.
When my actual period came, I reinserted the ring and kept it in until two weeks later when I had unprotected intercourse with my boyfriend.
After that, I removed the ring again after 20 minutes, cleaned it, and stored it in the refrigerator for another day and a half.
My question is, is there a chance I could be pregnant?

You Da You, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/10/08

Hello, the questioner: If there is no discomfort, it is actually not necessary to take it out.
However, if you do take it out, please do not exceed three hours.
If it is not more than three hours, the contraceptive effect will not be diminished.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant after removing a birth control IUD (intrauterine device), it’s important to understand how IUDs work and the implications of their removal. IUDs are a form of long-acting reversible contraception that can be very effective in preventing pregnancy. They work by creating an environment in the uterus that is inhospitable to sperm and eggs, thereby preventing fertilization.

If you have recently removed your IUD, your fertility can return almost immediately. This means that if you engage in unprotected intercourse after the removal, there is a possibility of becoming pregnant. The timing of your menstrual cycle and ovulation plays a crucial role in this scenario. If you removed the IUD during your fertile window (the days leading up to and including ovulation), the chances of conception increase significantly.

In your situation, you mentioned that you inserted the IUD, removed it shortly after, and then had unprotected intercourse two weeks later. If you were not on your period during the time of insertion and removal, and if you had ovulated during that cycle, there is a possibility that sperm could have fertilized an egg, leading to pregnancy. However, if you had your period after the IUD was removed, it is less likely that you would conceive during that cycle, as menstruation typically indicates that ovulation has not occurred.

It’s also worth noting that the effectiveness of an IUD can be compromised if it is removed and reinserted improperly or if it is not left in place for the recommended duration. Additionally, if you stored the IUD inappropriately (such as in the refrigerator), it may not function as intended if reinserted.

If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test if your period is late or if you experience any early signs of pregnancy, such as nausea or breast tenderness. If you have further concerns or questions about your reproductive health, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice based on your specific circumstances.

In summary, while it is possible to get pregnant after removing an IUD, the likelihood depends on various factors, including the timing of removal, your menstrual cycle, and whether you had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window. If you have any doubts or need further clarification, reaching out to a healthcare professional is always a good idea. They can provide you with the most accurate information and guidance tailored to your situation.
