Discharge on ovulation day?
Hello, doctor.
My recent menstrual period was from September 17 to September 21.
My basal body temperatures are as follows: September 26: 36.139, September 27: 35.949, September 28: 35.899, September 29: not measured, September 30: 36.05.
I had unprotected sexual activity on October 1: 36.01, October 2: 35.99, October 3: 35.78, October 4: 36.04, October 5: 36.55, October 6: 36.27.
I would like to ask the doctor the following questions, thank you!
(1) On September 30, there was approximately 3 minutes of unprotected sexual activity, followed by manual stimulation for about 4-5 minutes before ejaculation.
Would you consider that day to be within the fertile window? (My cycle is 30-32 days long.)
(2) Is ovulation likely to have occurred around October 3?
(3) As of today, October 9, I sometimes notice watery discharge in my underwear, and at other times, it is cervical mucus.
Is this normal? Thank you, doctor, for your time!

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, September 30th could be around your ovulation period.
If there is still discharge, it may indicate inflammation, and it would be advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding ovulation and discharge is essential for reproductive health, and your questions touch on several important aspects of the menstrual cycle and fertility awareness. Let’s break down your inquiries based on the information you provided.
1. Risk of Pregnancy on 9/30: You mentioned having unprotected intercourse for about three minutes on 9/30, followed by manual stimulation. The risk of pregnancy during this time depends on several factors, including your ovulation cycle. Given that your menstrual cycle is approximately 30-32 days, ovulation typically occurs around 14 days before your next period. If your last period started on 9/17, ovulation would likely occur around 10/1 to 10/3. Since you had unprotected intercourse on 9/30, which is close to your estimated ovulation date, there is a potential risk of pregnancy. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulated shortly after, there could be a chance of conception.
2. Estimated Ovulation Date: Based on your cycle length of 30-32 days, ovulation would likely occur around 10/1 to 10/3. Your basal body temperature (BBT) readings support this, as a rise in BBT typically indicates that ovulation has occurred. The drop in temperature on 10/3 (35.78) followed by a rise on 10/5 (36.55) suggests that ovulation may have occurred around that time. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that 10/3 is close to your ovulation day.
3. Discharge Observations: You noted experiencing water-like discharge and sometimes white discharge until 10/9. This is generally normal. During the menstrual cycle, cervical mucus changes in consistency and appearance due to hormonal fluctuations. Around ovulation, you may notice an increase in clear, stretchy, and watery discharge, which is conducive to sperm survival and transport. After ovulation, it’s common for the discharge to become thicker and creamier, which may explain the white discharge you are observing. If the discharge is not accompanied by any unusual symptoms (such as a strong odor, itching, or irritation), it is likely normal.
In summary, based on your cycle and the timing of your activities, there is a potential risk of pregnancy from the unprotected intercourse on 9/30, especially since it was close to your ovulation period. Your estimated ovulation date appears to be around 10/3, and the variations in discharge you are experiencing are typical of the menstrual cycle. If you have further concerns about pregnancy risk or any unusual symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and potential testing.
