Pap smear test
Hello, Dr.
Cheng! This afternoon at 3:00 PM, I had a Pap smear at the local health center.
The doctor mentioned that there was inflammation, and I will wait for the results in 2-3 weeks.
If everything is fine, I will go to the obstetrics and gynecology department to get anti-inflammatory medication.
However, after returning home around 4:30 PM, I noticed deep red discharge on my underwear.
My question is: my menstrual cycle has always been regular, and my next expected period is around Sunday to Monday (October 11).
Seeing this dark discharge today, I initially thought it might be an early onset due to stimulation (from the internal examination), but now I realize it is not menstruation (the discharge has stopped).
My discharge has always been normal, clear, and odorless, and it typically occurs 3-4 days before my fertile period (I have been tracking my basal body temperature for 7 years).
However, in the past two months, the discharge has increased slightly, appearing pale yellow with a slight odor.
I suspect there might be inflammation, but there is no itching, and aside from the increased discharge, I have no other discomfort.
I also do not feel any discomfort during intercourse.
Could you please advise me on whether my situation is serious? Is it possible that the Pap smear could have caused internal injury and bleeding? (This did not happen during last year's examination.) If there is inflammation, is it safe to take a bath? Can I still be intimate with my husband? Thank you!

Generally, after a cervical smear, there may be a small amount of red or brown discharge for one to two days.
This is due to the smear tool coming into contact with the cervical epithelium.
It is advisable to monitor for one to two days, and if the discharge does not stop, then return to the hospital for evaluation.
Inflammation is not related to bathing, and normal sexual activity can continue.

Dear Patient,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your recent Pap smear and the abnormal discharge you are experiencing. It's understandable to feel anxious about changes in your body, especially when they coincide with medical examinations. Let's break down your situation and address your questions.
Firstly, the presence of inflammation noted during your Pap smear can be indicative of several conditions, including infections or other benign processes. The deep red discharge you observed later in the day could be a result of several factors, including irritation from the examination itself, especially if it was a thorough internal exam. It's not uncommon for some women to experience light spotting or discharge after a Pap smear, particularly if there was any manipulation of the cervix. This is usually not a cause for concern and should resolve on its own.
Regarding your menstrual cycle, if you are expecting your period soon, the timing of this discharge could indeed be confusing. However, since you mentioned that this discharge is different from your usual menstrual flow and has ceased, it may simply be a transient response to the examination. It’s also worth noting that hormonal fluctuations can sometimes lead to changes in discharge consistency and color, which might explain the recent increase in yellowish discharge you mentioned.
As for the inflammation, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider once the results of your Pap smear are available. If the results indicate an infection or another issue, your doctor may prescribe appropriate treatment, which could include antibiotics or antifungal medications, depending on the diagnosis.
In terms of bathing and intimacy with your partner, it is generally advisable to avoid hot baths or any activities that may irritate the vaginal area until you have clarity on the inflammation and any potential infection. If you are experiencing any discomfort or unusual symptoms during intercourse, it would be wise to refrain from sexual activity until you have consulted with your healthcare provider.
If you notice any worsening of symptoms, such as increased pain, a significant change in discharge (such as a strong odor or a change in color), or if the bleeding persists, please seek medical attention sooner rather than later.
In summary, while your situation may seem concerning, it is likely a benign response to the recent examination. However, it is crucial to await the results of your Pap smear and follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
Take care, and I hope you find relief and clarity soon.
Best regards.
