There is a lump in the carotid artery area?

Hello Doctor, today while showering, I discovered a lump about 2 to 3 centimeters in size on the right side of my neck near the carotid artery.
It feels hard and does not move when touched, and there is a soreness when I gently press on it.
I'm unsure if my symptoms of dizziness and headache today are due to only getting 5 hours of sleep or if the lump is pressing on a nerve.
Previously, I have experienced lack of sleep without dizziness or headache.
Additionally, I have noticed that my heart rate feels faster than usual.
Should I go to the hospital for a detailed examination, or should I continue to monitor the situation? I would appreciate your guidance, thank you.

Hello, if there is no significant reduction in swelling within a short period, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngologist for examination and confirmation.

More Info

When it comes to neck masses, particularly those that are hard, non-mobile, and associated with pain or other symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. In your case, the discovery of a 2 to 3 cm mass on the right side of your neck, especially near the carotid artery, warrants a thorough evaluation.

Understanding Neck Masses
Neck masses can arise from various causes, including lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes), thyroid issues, infections, or even tumors. The characteristics of the mass you described—hardness, immobility, and tenderness—are significant. These features can indicate that the mass is not simply a benign lymph node but could be related to a more serious condition.

Symptoms to Consider
You mentioned experiencing dizziness, headaches, and an increased heart rate. While these symptoms could be attributed to lack of sleep, they may also suggest that the mass is affecting nearby structures or causing systemic effects. For instance, if the mass is pressing on nerves or blood vessels, it could lead to neurological symptoms or changes in heart rate due to stress or pain.

When to Seek Medical Attention
1. Size and Characteristics: Any neck mass that is larger than 1 cm, hard, and fixed in place should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. The fact that it is tender to touch adds to the urgency.

2. Associated Symptoms: The presence of dizziness, headaches, and changes in heart rate are concerning. These symptoms could indicate that the mass is affecting your neurological function or cardiovascular system.

3. Duration: If the mass has been present for more than a couple of weeks or is changing in size, it is essential to seek medical advice.

4. Other Symptoms: If you experience fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or difficulty swallowing, these could be signs of a more serious condition that requires immediate attention.

Recommended Actions
Given your situation, I strongly recommend that you seek medical attention as soon as possible. A healthcare provider will likely perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to better understand the nature of the mass. They may also consider blood tests to check for signs of infection or other systemic issues.

Conclusion
In summary, while it is possible that your symptoms are related to fatigue, the characteristics of the neck mass and the associated symptoms you are experiencing suggest that it is prudent to seek medical evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in managing any potential underlying conditions effectively. Please do not delay in consulting a healthcare professional for a thorough assessment. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these concerns promptly can lead to better outcomes.
