Dizziness after hitting the head?
Hello doctor, I accidentally bumped into a scaffold at the construction site yesterday while wearing a hard hat.
I felt that the impact wasn't significant, but I felt a bit dizzy and had some nausea (though I didn't vomit) that day.
I still feel a bit dizzy upon waking up today.
Is this normal?

When it comes to head injuries, especially those that result in symptoms like dizziness and nausea, it is crucial to take them seriously. Even if you were wearing a hard hat at the time of the injury, the brain can still be affected by impacts, leading to various symptoms, including dizziness, headaches, and nausea.
In your case, experiencing dizziness and a feeling of nausea after hitting your head, even if the impact felt minor, warrants attention. Symptoms like these can be indicative of a concussion or other forms of traumatic brain injury (TBI). A concussion is a type of brain injury that occurs when the brain is jolted or shaken inside the skull, which can happen even with a seemingly minor impact.
The fact that you are still feeling dizzy the day after the incident is concerning. While some mild dizziness can be a normal response to a head injury, persistent symptoms should not be ignored. Other symptoms to watch for include:
1. Headaches: If your headache worsens or changes in character, it could be a sign of a more serious issue.
2. Nausea or Vomiting: While you mentioned you haven't vomited, persistent nausea can be a red flag.
3. Confusion or Memory Issues: Difficulty concentrating or remembering things can indicate a concussion.
4. Balance Problems: If you find it hard to walk or maintain your balance, this is another concerning sign.
5. Changes in Vision: Blurred or double vision can also occur after a head injury.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a neurological examination and possibly imaging studies like a CT scan to rule out any serious injuries such as bleeding in the brain or skull fractures.
In the United States, the general recommendation is to seek medical care if you experience any of the following after a head injury:
- Persistent or worsening headache
- Repeated vomiting
- Seizures
- Difficulty waking up or staying awake
- Slurred speech or confusion
- Weakness or numbness in the limbs
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to go to the emergency room or contact your healthcare provider immediately.
In summary, while some dizziness after a head injury can be normal, your ongoing symptoms suggest that you should not wait to seek medical attention. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to head injuries. A healthcare professional can provide you with the appropriate care and guidance to ensure your safety and recovery.
