Ear problems

Hello, Doctor.
I am Wang, the student who asked a question this morning.
I went to the clinic this morning because water got into my ear.
They used a device to suction it out.
However, around 5 PM, I noticed blood coming from my ear.
Now, after taking a shower in the evening, my face, neck, and head feel uncomfortable.
My ear still has a popping sound, and my nose is congested.
What could be the cause of this? What kind of condition is this? Thank you.

Hello, it is common to experience external auditory canal inflammation or otitis media.
It is recommended to return to the otolaryngology department for medical treatment.

Hello Wang,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your ear discomfort. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a series of symptoms that could be indicative of several underlying issues. Let's break down your symptoms and explore potential causes and solutions.

Firstly, the fact that you experienced bleeding from your ear after having water in it suggests that there may be some trauma or irritation to the ear canal or possibly the eardrum. This could be due to a few reasons:
1. Ear Canal Irritation or Infection: If water gets trapped in the ear canal, it can lead to irritation or even an infection, known as otitis externa (swimmer's ear). This condition can cause pain, itching, and sometimes bleeding if the skin in the ear canal becomes inflamed or if there is excessive scratching.

2. Eardrum Injury: If the suction used to remove water was too forceful, it could potentially cause a rupture in the eardrum, leading to bleeding. Symptoms of a ruptured eardrum can include sharp pain, hearing loss, and fluid drainage from the ear.

3. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The sensation of fullness or "popping" in the ear, along with nasal congestion, may indicate that your Eustachian tubes (which connect the middle ear to the back of the throat) are not functioning properly. This can happen due to allergies, colds, or sinus infections, leading to pressure changes in the ear.

Given that you are also experiencing discomfort in your face, head, and neck, it is possible that there is a sinus component to your symptoms. Sinusitis can cause referred pain to the ears and may also lead to a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ears.

Recommendations:
1. Seek Medical Attention: Given the bleeding and ongoing discomfort, it is crucial to see an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist as soon as possible. They can perform a thorough examination of your ear, including checking for any damage to the eardrum and assessing for signs of infection.

2. Avoid Inserting Objects into the Ear: Do not attempt to clean your ear with cotton swabs or other objects, as this can further irritate the ear canal or push debris deeper into the ear.

3. Manage Nasal Congestion: If you are experiencing nasal congestion, consider using a saline nasal spray or a decongestant to help relieve pressure in your Eustachian tubes. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.

4. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear may help alleviate some discomfort and promote drainage if there is any fluid buildup.

5. Hydration and Rest: Ensure you are well-hydrated and get plenty of rest to support your immune system, especially if there is an underlying infection.

Conclusion:
Your symptoms warrant a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Do not delay in seeking care, especially with the presence of bleeding and persistent discomfort. I hope you find relief soon and can return to your normal activities without discomfort.
Take care and best wishes for your recovery!
