Persistent Thirst and Unusual Belly Button Discharge: What to Know - Family Medicine

Persistent thirst with discharge from the navel?

Hello, Doctor.
Recently, I've been feeling very thirsty often, and even after drinking a lot of water, it doesn't help.
One day, I noticed a yellowish discharge around my navel (sometimes it appears reddish-brown).
I visited a dermatologist who prescribed topical treatments and anti-inflammatory medication, which improved the condition (the discharge decreased and became clearer).
However, after stopping the medication, the discharge around my navel returned to being yellowish.
In middle school, a dermatologist diagnosed me with eczema (my hands would crack, and I would have discharge and itching in my chest from wearing tight clothing), but currently, I have no eczema on my hands or chest.
The discharge around my navel resembles the discharge I had from the eczema on my chest, but I'm unsure if eczema could cause constant thirst.
I would like to ask if my current condition could also be related to eczema, and which department I should visit at the hospital.
Thank you.

Persistent thirst and unusual discharge from the belly button can be concerning symptoms that warrant further investigation. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing two distinct issues: persistent thirst and a discharge from your belly button that has changed in color and consistency.

Persistent Thirst:
Persistent thirst, or polydipsia, can be caused by several factors. One common cause is dehydration, which can occur due to inadequate fluid intake, excessive sweating, or conditions that lead to fluid loss, such as diabetes mellitus. In diabetes, high blood sugar levels can cause the body to lose more water through urine, leading to increased thirst. Other potential causes include certain medications, hormonal imbalances, and even psychological factors. Given that you mentioned feeling thirsty despite drinking plenty of water, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider to rule out conditions like diabetes or other metabolic disorders.

Belly Button Discharge:
The discharge from your belly button, especially if it has changed from yellow to reddish-brown, could indicate an infection or inflammation. The presence of a yellow discharge may suggest a bacterial infection, while reddish-brown could indicate the presence of blood or a more serious underlying issue. Since you have a history of eczema, it is possible that the discharge could be related to skin irritation or infection, especially if there is a history of scratching or irritation in that area. Eczema can sometimes lead to secondary infections due to skin barrier disruption.

The fact that the discharge improved with anti-inflammatory medication suggests that there may be an inflammatory component to your symptoms. However, the recurrence of the discharge after stopping the medication indicates that the underlying issue has not been fully resolved.

Next Steps:
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is essential to seek further evaluation. You may want to consider visiting a dermatologist, as they specialize in skin conditions and can assess the discharge from your belly button in the context of your history of eczema. Additionally, if the persistent thirst continues or worsens, it may be beneficial to see an endocrinologist or a primary care physician who can evaluate for potential metabolic or hormonal issues.

In summary, while your symptoms may be interrelated, they could also stem from separate underlying conditions. Persistent thirst should be evaluated to rule out diabetes or other metabolic disorders, while the discharge from your belly button should be assessed for possible infection or inflammatory skin conditions. A thorough examination and possibly some laboratory tests will help clarify the diagnosis and guide appropriate treatment.
