Suspected throat inflammation progressing to otitis media?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about my sore throat, which has lasted for 4-5 days.
I have been drinking warm beverages in between, but there has been no improvement.
It hurts to swallow saliva and to talk, and I even experience sharp pain in my eardrum when swallowing, although pressing on the eardrum alleviates the pain.
I had a fever for the first two days, but it was only around 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit).
Additionally, I started my menstrual period, and on the first day, I took pain relievers for menstrual cramps.
After taking the medication and sleeping, I woke up to find that my throat still hurts, despite drinking more water.
Could you please advise me on what this situation might be? Thank you, doctor.

More Info
Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a combination of throat pain and ear discomfort, which can often be interrelated due to the anatomical connections between the throat and the ear. This condition is commonly referred to as referred pain, where pain in one area of the body is perceived as coming from another area.
Throat pain that persists for several days, especially when accompanied by fever, can indicate an underlying infection. The most common causes of such symptoms include viral infections like the common cold or influenza, bacterial infections such as strep throat, or even tonsillitis. In your case, the fact that you are experiencing pain while swallowing and speaking, along with the ear pain, suggests that there may be inflammation in the throat that is affecting the nearby structures, including the Eustachian tube, which connects the throat to the middle ear.
The Eustachian tube plays a crucial role in equalizing pressure in the ear and draining fluid. If it becomes inflamed or blocked due to infection or allergies, it can lead to a sensation of fullness or pain in the ear, as well as discomfort when swallowing. This could explain why you feel pain in your ear when swallowing, as the movement can affect the pressure in the ear.
Given that you have had a fever and are experiencing significant pain, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, which may include a throat swab to check for bacterial infections like strep throat. If a bacterial infection is confirmed, antibiotics may be necessary for treatment. Additionally, they may examine your ears to rule out any middle ear infections (otitis media), which can also cause ear pain and discomfort.
In the meantime, there are several self-care measures you can take to alleviate your symptoms:
1. Stay Hydrated: Continue to drink plenty of fluids, as hydration can help soothe a sore throat and keep mucus thin.
2. Warm Salt Water Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce throat inflammation and provide temporary relief.
3. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce fever. However, be sure to follow the recommended dosages and consult with a healthcare provider if you have any concerns.
4. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your room can help keep the air moist, which may ease throat discomfort.
5. Rest: Ensure you are getting enough rest to allow your body to recover.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop new symptoms such as difficulty breathing, severe headache, or rash, it is important to seek immediate medical attention.
In summary, your throat pain and ear discomfort are likely interconnected, and addressing the underlying cause through medical evaluation and treatment is essential for relief. Please consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
