Left rib pain?

Hello, Doctor: Last week, I had a few days of intense coughing, and since last week, I've been feeling pain near the lower left side of my ribcage.
I don't experience pain during normal breathing, but I feel a slight discomfort when taking deep breaths or coughing forcefully.
I don't feel any discomfort or pain while playing sports, but I do notice more pain when getting up from a lying position, and there is some pain when I stretch my chest.
It hurts when I press on the area.
I would like to ask for your advice.
Thank you.

Dr. Wang Shouji reply Orthopedics

Hello, the thorax may experience myofascial pain due to coughing or impact, and in more severe cases, it can lead to fractures of the bones.
However, most cases will heal within 1 to 4 weeks.
Applying heat and using topical ointments or patches can help alleviate discomfort.
Changhua Hospital cares about your health.
Sincerely, Wang Shou-ji.

More Info

Understanding left rib pain can be complex, as it may stem from various causes ranging from minor issues to more serious conditions. Given your recent history of vigorous coughing, it is possible that your rib pain is related to muscular strain or inflammation in the area surrounding the ribs. Here’s a breakdown of potential causes and recommendations on when to seek medical help.

Potential Causes of Left Rib Pain
1. Muscle Strain: Intense coughing can lead to muscle strain in the intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs. This strain can cause localized pain that may worsen with certain movements, such as twisting or lifting, and can be felt more acutely when lying down or getting up.

2. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain that may be exacerbated by deep breathing, coughing, or certain movements. The pain is usually localized and can be reproduced by pressing on the affected area.

3. Rib Fracture: Although less likely if you have not experienced trauma, a rib fracture can occur from severe coughing. This would typically present with sharp pain, especially during movement or deep breaths, and may be accompanied by swelling or bruising.

4. Pleurisy: This condition involves inflammation of the pleura, the membranes surrounding the lungs. It can cause sharp chest pain that worsens with breathing or coughing. However, pleuritic pain is usually more widespread and may be associated with other symptoms like shortness of breath or fever.

5. Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, pain in the left rib area can be referred from gastrointestinal problems, such as gastritis or issues with the spleen. These conditions may present with additional symptoms like nausea or changes in bowel habits.

6. Cardiac Concerns: While less common, it’s important to consider that rib pain can sometimes be related to heart issues, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like shortness of breath, sweating, or radiating pain.

When to Seek Medical Help
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to monitor your condition closely. Here are some guidelines on when to seek medical attention:
- Persistent Pain: If the pain does not improve with rest or over-the-counter pain relief, or if it worsens over time.

- Difficulty Breathing: If you experience shortness of breath, wheezing, or any significant changes in your breathing pattern.

- Severe Pain: If the pain becomes severe or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as fever, chills, or unexplained weight loss.

- History of Trauma: If you have experienced any trauma to the chest area, even if it seems minor, and the pain persists.

Management and Relief
In the meantime, here are some self-care strategies you can consider:
- Rest: Allow your body to heal by avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain.

- Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes several times a day can help reduce inflammation and pain.

- Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.

- Gentle Stretching: Once the acute pain subsides, gentle stretching exercises may help improve flexibility and reduce tension in the chest and rib area.

Conclusion
While rib pain can often be attributed to muscle strain or inflammation, it is essential to remain vigilant about your symptoms. If you experience any concerning signs or if the pain persists, seeking medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. Always prioritize your health and well-being, and don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional if you have any doubts or concerns.
