Eczema issues?
Hello Doctor, today I noticed three red spots lined up on the glans.
They are not painful or itchy, and feel smooth to the touch.
I suspect it might be a recurrence of eczema.
I currently use a hairdryer on a cool setting to dry my genital area after showering, and I also use a towel to pat it dry.
Why does the eczema still recur despite this? My eczema is not painful or itchy; does that mean it is mild? If I don't apply medication, will it heal on its own? How should I care for the eczema-affected skin now? I feel like I am drying off thoroughly after my showers...

More Info
Eczema, particularly in sensitive areas such as the genital region, can be a challenging condition to manage. The symptoms you describe—three smooth, red spots on the glans that are neither painful nor itchy—could indeed suggest a mild form of eczema or another dermatological condition. It's essential to understand that eczema can manifest in various ways, and its triggers can be multifactorial.
Causes of Eczema in the Genital Area
1. Irritants: Products such as soaps, detergents, or even certain fabrics can irritate the skin, leading to eczema flare-ups. Even if you are using a blow dryer and towel to dry the area, residual moisture or irritants from products can still provoke a reaction.
2. Allergens: Allergic reactions to substances like latex (from condoms), personal care products, or even certain fabrics can cause localized eczema.
3. Moisture: The genital area is prone to moisture, which can exacerbate eczema. Even with careful drying, if the area remains damp for extended periods, it can lead to irritation.
4. Temperature and Humidity: Changes in climate, such as moving from Taiwan to the Netherlands, can affect skin conditions. Colder, drier air can lead to skin dryness, which may trigger eczema.
5. Stress: Psychological stress can also play a role in the exacerbation of eczema, as it can affect the immune system and skin barrier function.
Care Tips for Eczema in the Genital Area
1. Moisturization: Regularly apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to the affected area. This helps maintain skin hydration and can prevent flare-ups. Look for products specifically designed for sensitive skin.
2. Gentle Cleansing: Use mild, unscented cleansers. Avoid harsh soaps or products with alcohol, which can strip the skin of its natural oils.
3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any known irritants or allergens. This may involve switching to hypoallergenic products or avoiding certain fabrics.
4. Clothing Choices: Wear loose-fitting, breathable underwear made from natural fibers like cotton. This can help reduce moisture buildup and irritation.
5. Temperature Control: Keep the area dry and cool. If you sweat, change out of damp clothing promptly.
6. Topical Treatments: If the eczema persists or worsens, consider using a topical steroid cream as directed by a healthcare provider. These can help reduce inflammation and itching, even if you are not experiencing significant discomfort.
7. Observation: Monitor the spots closely. If they change in appearance, become painful, or if you develop additional symptoms, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
Will It Resolve on Its Own?
Mild eczema can sometimes resolve without treatment, especially if the triggers are removed. However, if the condition persists, it is advisable to seek medical advice. A dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific situation.
Conclusion
Eczema in the genital area can be managed effectively with the right care and lifestyle adjustments. While your current routine of drying and cleaning is commendable, consider incorporating more moisturizing and protective measures. If symptoms continue or worsen, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and personalized treatment options. Remember, maintaining skin health is a continuous process, especially in sensitive areas.
