Do oral contraceptives interact with other medications?

I am currently taking the oral contraceptive pill Marilyne and have recently taken the following three medications due to an injury: 1.
Cephalexin (monohydrate) 2.
Oxethazaine 3.
Ketoprofen.
I would like to know if these medications will affect the effectiveness of the contraceptive.

Qiu Xiaojie, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/11/30

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology

Hello Ms.
Chiu:
1.
According to Micromedex, antibiotics may reduce the gut flora that aids in the absorption of oral contraceptives.
The antibiotic Cephalexin you are taking may slightly decrease the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill.
There are no interactions between the contraceptive pill and the medications Oxethazaine and Ketoprofen.

2.
Grapefruit juice can enhance liver enzyme activity, leading to an accelerated metabolism of the contraceptive pill, thereby reducing its efficacy.
Therefore, it is advised not to consume grapefruit juice.

Wishing you peace, joy, and good health.

When it comes to the efficacy of birth control pills, it is crucial to understand how certain medications can interact with hormonal contraceptives. Birth control pills, such as the one you mentioned (Mirean), primarily work by delivering hormones that prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining. However, some medications can potentially interfere with these mechanisms, leading to a decreased effectiveness of the contraceptive.

In your case, you are taking three medications: Cephalexin, Oxethazaine, and Ketoprofen. Let's break down their potential interactions with birth control pills:
1. Cephalexin: This is a type of antibiotic that belongs to the cephalosporin class. Generally, most antibiotics do not affect the efficacy of birth control pills. However, there is a notable exception with certain antibiotics, particularly rifampin and rifabutin, which are known to decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Cephalexin has not been shown to have this effect, so it is unlikely to interfere with your birth control.

2. Oxethazaine: This medication is primarily used as a local anesthetic and is often found in topical formulations for treating pain or discomfort. It does not have any known interactions with hormonal contraceptives and should not affect the efficacy of your birth control pills.

3. Ketoprofen: This is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation. Like Oxethazaine, Ketoprofen does not have any known interactions with birth control pills and is not expected to impact their effectiveness.

In summary, based on the medications you are currently taking, there is no evidence to suggest that they will reduce the effectiveness of your birth control pills. However, it is always wise to consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any new medications you are prescribed, especially if you are concerned about potential interactions with your contraceptive method.

It is also important to remember that while most medications do not affect hormonal contraceptives, factors such as gastrointestinal issues (vomiting or diarrhea) can impact absorption and, consequently, the effectiveness of the pill. If you experience any side effects from your medications or have concerns about your birth control, it is advisable to discuss these with your healthcare provider.

In conclusion, while the medications you mentioned should not affect the efficacy of your birth control pills, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking is essential for ensuring your reproductive health and overall well-being.
