Is It a False Positive? Early Pregnancy Tests - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Unsure if I am really pregnant?

Hello, doctor.
I had sexual intercourse in early November, and my period was due on November 24.
I usually don't have delays.
I took a pregnancy test on November 28, and both lines were very clearly positive.
Could this be a false pregnancy? How long should I wait before testing again? I read online that initial tests often show one dark line and one faint line, but both of mine are very dark, which I find strange.
I'm wondering if this could be a false positive.

Ms. Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/12/01

When it comes to early pregnancy testing, understanding the nuances of the results is crucial. Based on your description, you had unprotected intercourse in early November, and your expected menstrual period was on November 24. You conducted a pregnancy test on November 28, which showed two clearly visible lines, indicating a positive result.
Firstly, let's address the concern about false positives. A false positive pregnancy test result can occur, but it is relatively rare, especially with modern home pregnancy tests that are designed to be highly sensitive and specific. False positives can happen due to several reasons, including:
1. Chemical Pregnancy: This occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus but fails to develop properly, leading to a very early miscarriage. In such cases, the pregnancy hormone (hCG) may still be present in your urine, resulting in a positive test.

2. Medications: Certain medications, particularly those containing hCG (like some fertility treatments), can lead to a false positive result.

3. Evaporation Lines: Sometimes, if a test is read after the recommended time frame, an evaporation line may appear, which can be mistaken for a positive result.

4. User Error: Not following the test instructions properly can also lead to inaccurate results.

Given that you received two strong lines on your test, it is more likely that you are indeed pregnant. Home pregnancy tests are generally very reliable, especially when taken after a missed period. The fact that both lines are strong suggests that there is a significant level of hCG in your urine, which typically indicates a progressing pregnancy.

To ensure the accuracy of your results, it is advisable to wait a few days and take another pregnancy test. The best time to retest is about one week after your missed period, which would be around December 1 in your case. Testing at this time will allow for a more accurate reading, as hCG levels double approximately every 48 to 72 hours in early pregnancy.

If you continue to receive positive results, it would be wise to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for a blood test and an ultrasound. A blood test can measure the exact level of hCG in your bloodstream, providing a more definitive answer regarding your pregnancy status. An ultrasound can confirm the presence of a gestational sac and help determine how far along you are.

In summary, while false positives can occur, they are uncommon, especially with clear and strong results. Given your situation, it is advisable to wait a few days and retest. If the results remain positive, consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and confirmation of your pregnancy. Remember, early pregnancy can come with a range of symptoms and experiences, and it’s important to take care of your health during this time.
