Missed menstruation and pregnancy testing issues?
Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycle over the past six months has been as follows: June: 11-16, July: 19-25, August: 23-28, September, October: 25-30.
This month, I had sexual intercourse on the 6th, 7th, and 13th, with my boyfriend using a condom throughout (on the 13th, I'm unsure if he inserted a few times before putting on the condom).
Afterward, we checked with water and found no issues.
The app predicted my period would start on November 27, but it has been delayed by four days.
I checked online, and a delay of plus or minus seven days is within the normal range.
Regardless of whether I count from the 6th, 7th, or 13th, it has been over two weeks.
Should I continue to wait or buy a pregnancy test to check? P.S.: I've been very busy and staying up late recently, so I'm not sure if this is just due to hormonal imbalance.
Thank you for your response, Doctor.
Tao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/12/01

Hello, the chances of pregnancy should be low, but you can take a pregnancy test to check.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
When faced with a missed period, especially after engaging in sexual activity, it is natural to wonder whether to take a pregnancy test or wait for your menstrual cycle to resume. Based on the information you provided, it seems that you have a relatively regular menstrual cycle, with your last period expected around November 27. Since you have missed your period by four days, it is reasonable to consider taking a pregnancy test.
Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. Generally, the best time to take a pregnancy test is after your period is missed, as this allows for the most accurate results. However, if you are feeling anxious or uncertain, taking a test now can provide you with some clarity.
Given that you have had sexual intercourse on the 6th, 7th, and 13th of the month, and your boyfriend used condoms, the likelihood of pregnancy is lower, especially if you checked the condom for any leaks or breaks. However, it is important to note that no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and pre-ejaculate fluid can sometimes contain sperm, which could lead to pregnancy if it comes into contact with the vaginal area.
You mentioned that you have been busy and have been staying up late, which can indeed affect your menstrual cycle. Stress, changes in routine, and hormonal imbalances can all contribute to a delayed period. If you suspect that your missed period may be due to stress or lifestyle changes, it might be worth waiting a few more days to see if your period arrives. However, if you are feeling anxious about the possibility of being pregnant, taking a home pregnancy test can help alleviate your concerns.
If you decide to take a pregnancy test, make sure to follow the instructions carefully for the most accurate results. It is often recommended to use the first urine of the morning, as it tends to have the highest concentration of hCG. If the test is negative but your period still does not arrive within a week, consider retesting or consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, it is advisable to take a pregnancy test if you are feeling uncertain about your missed period. If the result is negative and your period does not come, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues, such as hormonal imbalances or other medical conditions. Remember, your health and peace of mind are important, so don't hesitate to seek medical advice if needed.
